Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary Behind Iron Gates

Fifty miles north of the city, nestled high along the rocky coastline behind miles of private pine forest and ten-foot wrought-iron gates, stood the Vance estate. The sprawling limestone manor overlooked the turbulent gray waters of the Atlantic, standing like an unshakeable fortress against the howling wind.

Inside the sun-drenched breakfast room, the scent of fresh buttermilk pancakes and warm maple syrup filled the air. Leo was sitting on a plush velvet chair, his small legs swinging freely as he carefully spread strawberry jam onto his toast. Beside him sat Julian Vance, stripped of his tailored three-piece suit, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms. The ruthless billionaire who commanded global fleets was currently showing a five-year-old boy how to fold a napkin into the shape of a sailboat.

""Like this, Uncle Julian?"" Leo asked, his big brown eyes sparkling with a brightness that had been missing for months.

""Exactly like that, buddy,"" Julian replied, his voice deep, warm, and endlessly patient. ""You’ve got steady hands. Just like your mother.""

Claire stood by the French doors, holding a steaming mug of black tea, watching the two of them. A deep, heavy ache that had resided in the center of her ribcage for six long years was finally beginning to loosen. She had spent half a decade shrinking herself, making her footprint smaller, smiling through backhanded compliments from her mother-in-law, and swallowing the bitter humiliation of being treated like a second-class citizen in her own marriage.

All for what? To give Leo a complete family. To protect a husband who viewed her dignity as an acceptable sacrifice for keeping peace with his spoiled childhood friend.

""Mommy, look!"" Leo beamed, holding up the triangular cloth. ""Uncle Julian said we can go see the real boats at the dock this afternoon! Real big ones with engines!""

""Only if you eat all your fruit, young man,"" Claire said softly, walking over and pressing a gentle kiss into his dark curls.

Julian waited until the nanny stepped into the room to guide Leo to the playroom before he stood up and approached Claire. His expression grew serious, his striking gray eyes analyzing every line of exhaustion etched around her face.

""Harrison served him an hour ago,"" Julian said quietly, handing her an encrypted tablet. ""Alexander tried to access your shared trust fund to trace your location. The bank flagged the attempt and locked his corporate credentials within three minutes. My legal team has already secured an ex parte restraining order barring him from approaching Leo’s school, your former studio, or any property associated with the Bennett-Vance name.""

Claire looked down at the tablet screen. Dozens of frantic voice notes and messages from Alexander were queued up, unread.

Claire, please. Let's talk. I was wrong about the car. I'll make it right. Just bring Leo home.

Claire, answer me! Who was that man in the Maybach?! What are you doing?!

You can't keep my son from me, Claire! I'm warning you!

She swiped the notifications away without listening to a single word. The empty apologies came six years too late. When a man had to be threatened with complete financial and social ruination before he remembered that he had a wife and son, his remorse was nothing more than panic.

""Is the port authority review ready?"" Claire asked, her voice calm and devoid of the timid softness she had worn as Mrs. Moretti.

May you like

Julian smiled slightly, a cold, dangerous glint in his eyes. ""The Moretti Group’s flagship luxury cruise liner is scheduled to dock in Boston tomorrow morning for the maiden voyage launch. The harbor master answers directly to my maritime board. If you give the word, Claire, that ship doesn't leave the slipway.""

Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the crashing waves. ""Not yet, Julian. Let him keep digging his own grave. He still believes money can buy his way out of every mistake. Let him realize that there are some debts he cannot pay.""
