Chapter 4 - The Gala of Reckoning

Three weeks passed. Three agonizing weeks where Alexander Moretti’s world systematically unraveled at the seams.
The annual Metropolitan Heritage Gala was the single most prestigious social event of the autumn calendar. Held in the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel, it gathered the elite echelon of politics, finance, and old society. Historically, Alexander had walked that red carpet with his head held high, basking in the flashbulbs of the press. Tonight, however, the whispers followed him like a swarm of hornets from the moment he stepped out of his limousine alone.
Rumors of the impending Moretti divorce had exploded across the tabloids. Even worse, the sudden freeze on Moretti Group’s coastal development permits had sparked panic among institutional investors, causing their stock to tumble eight percent in ten days.
Sophia attempted to approach him near the champagne fountain, wearing an extravagant crimson gown designed to draw attention, but Alexander coldly turned his shoulder and walked directly away from her in full view of twenty high-profile socialites. The public snub sent shockwaves through the room.
Then, the heavy brass doors of the ballroom swung wide, and the ambient hum of three hundred conversations dropped into an immediate, breathless silence.
Claire entered.
She did not look like the quiet, unassuming woman who used to sit demurely in the corners of Moretti family portraits. She wore an emerald-green silk velvet gown that cascaded to the polished parquet floor like molten jewel, accentuating her regal posture. A necklace of raw, uncut emeralds circled her throat—an heirloom from the private Vance vault that hadn't been seen in public for three decades. Her dark hair was swept into an intricate updo, revealing a face of striking, calm nobility.
On her left arm walked Julian Vance, looking every bit the devastatingly handsome, untouchable titan that the world feared. But what drew the breath from every throat in the room was the small boy walking proudly on Claire’s right side.
Leo wore a miniature bespoke midnight-blue tuxedo, his chin held high, holding his mother’s hand with absolute confidence. He wasn't crying. He wasn't looking around nervously. He looked like a young prince who knew he was completely safe, cherished, and adored.
Alexander felt all the oxygen leave his chest. ""Claire..."" he choked out, taking two involuntary steps forward.
The crowd parted naturally for them. The mayor stepped aside with a respectful nod to Julian; the chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank greeted Claire with a warm, two-handed clasp. She wasn't just attending the gala; she was the guest of honor whose charitable trust was funding the entire evening's foundation.
Alexander pushed through the onlookers, desperate, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird. ""Claire! Please, stop!""
Claire halted. She turned slowly, her cool, emerald-draped figure facing him with absolute composure. Her gaze was steady, clear, and completely devoid of hatred. There was only pure, indifferent detachment—a look far more devastating than any scream of anger.
""Alexander,"" she said evenly, her voice carrying clearly in the hushed hall.
""Claire, we have to talk,"" Alexander pleaded, lowering his voice, conscious of the dozens of cameras discreetly pointed in their direction. ""Look at me. Look at Leo! Leo, buddy, it’s Daddy. Come here—""

Leo instinctively stepped behind Claire’s gown, peeking out with cautious, guarded eyes. He didn't run to his father. He tucked his small hand tightly into Julian’s large palm. Julian gently rested a protective hand on the boy’s shoulder, his piercing gray eyes locking onto Alexander with a lethality that made the billionaire CEO freeze mid-stride.
""Don't do this here, Alexander,"" Claire said, her tone as smooth as glass. ""You told me three weeks ago not to make a scene on an important day. I am simply returning the courtesy.""
