Chapter 5 - The Price of Neglect

""Claire, I made a mistake!"" Alexander’s voice cracked, public decorum slipping from his grasp like sand. He didn't care that the city’s top banking magnates were watching him plead. He didn't care that his mother was glaring at him in horror from across the room. All he saw was the immense, unbridgeable chasm between him and the woman he had taken for granted every day of their married life.
""It wasn't a mistake, Alexander,"" Claire answered softly, taking a step toward him, her emerald necklace catching the chandelier light. ""A mistake is forgetting to pick up dry cleaning. A mistake is arriving twenty minutes late to dinner. What you did was an intentional choice. You made that choice every single day for six years.""
""I never touched Sophia! I never loved her!"" Alexander exclaimed desperately. ""You knew that! It was just history, just family obligation—""
""It was disrespect,"" Claire interrupted, her words slicing through his excuses with surgical precision. ""You taught your parents that it was acceptable to demean me. You taught Sophia that she could walk into our home and claim the seat beside you. And on your father’s birthday, you looked into the eyes of our five-year-old child and told him there was no room for him in your life.""
A collective murmur rolled through the surrounding crowd. High society loved a scandal, but treating one’s own heir like a disposable afterthought crossed an unspoken line even among the most ruthless elites. Several prominent board members who had supported Alexander shifted uncomfortably, avoiding his gaze.
""I didn't mean it that way..."" Alexander stammered, his eyes stinging with sudden, burning moisture. ""I was distracted... I was running late—""
""He asked me if you didn't want him,"" Claire whispered, her voice tightening with quiet steel. ""Do you have any idea what it feels like to hold a five-year-old boy in your arms while he wonders why his father doesn't love him enough to let him sit in a car? You didn't just break my heart, Alexander. You tried to break his spirit. And for that, I will never let you touch our lives again.""
Julian stepped forward then, his imposing frame casting a shadow over Alexander. He didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to.

""Mr. Moretti,"" Julian said, his tone icy enough to freeze water. ""The Vance Trust has exercised its contractual buy-out clause on your harbor terminals as of 5:00 PM today. Your board has already received the formal notification. By tomorrow morning, the Moretti Group will either divest entirely from the maritime corridor, or your bank loans will be called in for immediate settlement. My sister offered you a peaceful life. You offered her humiliation. Now, you will face the consequences.""
Claire didn't wait for Alexander to respond. She gently turned Leo around, rested her hand on Julian’s arm, and walked toward the grand VIP terrace, leaving Alexander standing in the center of the ballroom floor, utterly devastated and completely alone under the harsh glare of a hundred watchful eyes.
