Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Glass Tower

Alexander Moretti’s hand trembled so violently that the high-resolution tablet slipped from his grasp, striking the Italian marble floor of his penthouse office with a sharp, hollow crack. The display didn’t shatter; instead, it stared back up at him under the bright halogen lights, freezing the frame of that rain-slicked driveway outside the estate gates.

The man stepping out of the sleek black Maybach was not just an unfamiliar rival or some fleeting friend from Claire’s quiet past. He was Julian Vance.

Julian Vance—the reclusive shipping magnate and sovereign wealth fund titan whose family held the controlling debt on three-quarters of the Moretti Group’s overseas harbor developments. Julian, who rarely appeared in public, who treated corporate takeovers like casual chess matches, and whose name made seasoned Wall Street wolves lower their voices in executive boardrooms.

Alexander dropped heavily into his leather executive chair, loosening his silk tie with fingers that were suddenly cold and clammy. His breath hitched in his chest as his mind raced back six years. When he had first met Claire Bennett at an upscale charity gallery in Manhattan, she had been working as an understated, soft-spoken art restorer. She carried no airs of high society, demanded nothing extravagant, and wore quiet elegance like a second skin. Alexander had assumed she was an orphan from a respectable, forgotten lineage, someone completely unconnected to the ruthless shark tanks of global high finance.

He had never once imagined that Claire was the beloved, fiercely protected foster sibling and sole heiress of the Vance family legacy—a woman who had chosen to walk away from an astronomical dynasty to build what she foolishly thought would be a simple, genuine life of love with him.

""Sir?"" Mark, his chief assistant, hesitated near the double mahogany doors, his voice laced with uncharacteristic panic. ""The legal notice wasn’t an idle threat. It was hand-delivered twenty minutes ago by Harrison & Sterling LLP. Their senior managing partner signed it personally. They’ve already filed an emergency motion for sole physical custody and an immediate freeze on all joint liquid accounts.""

""Get her on the phone,"" Alexander barked, though the commanding snap he usually carried sounded hollow, almost pathetic. ""Now, Mark! Call her mother, call her studio, call every contact in her address book!""

""Her personal line is completely disconnected, Mr. Moretti,"" Mark replied, swallowing hard. ""And her studio lease was terminated this morning at dawn. All personal effects have been moved out. It’s as if she erased herself from the city within six hours.""

Just then, the private elevator chimed. The bronze doors slid open, and Sophia Reynolds glided into the office, wrapped in an ivory cashmere coat that Alexander had bought her during their last trip to Paris. Her delicate face was flushed with manufactured outrage, her heels clicking crisply against the marble.

""Alexander, darling, what on earth is going on?"" Sophia pouted, leaning gracefully over his desk and resting a manicured hand over his clenched fist. ""Your mother told me you stormed out of the birthday brunch before the cake was even cut. Everyone at the country club was whispering. Claire is just throwing another one of her childish temper tantrums because she had to take the town car. She always ruins your family milestones. Honestly, she needs to learn her place.""

For six years, Alexander had found that soft, helpless voice comforting. He had convinced himself that Sophia was fragile, an innocent angel from his youth who needed his protection from the cold world—and from Claire’s supposed jealousy. But right now, looking at the diamond bracelet glinting on Sophia’s wrist, hearing her dismiss his five-year-old son’s heartbroken tears as a mere inconvenience, an ugly knot of nausea twisted in his gut.

""Shut up, Sophia,"" Alexander muttered, his voice raw.

Sophia froze, her petulant pout turning into shock. ""What did you say to me?""

Alexander stood up, towering over her, his eyes wild and bloodshot. ""Leo asked me if I didn't want him. My own son stood on the asphalt and asked me why his father wouldn't ride with him. And I left him there because you wanted the leather seat in my truck!""

""Alexander, you offered!"" Sophia cried, taking a hurried step backward. ""You said it was fine! You know my back hurts in sedan seats—""

May you like

""Get out,"" Alexander whispered, his voice dangerously low. ""Get out of my office before I say something I can't take back.""

Sophia stared at him in disbelief, then grabbed her designer handbag and stormed toward the private lift. As the doors closed, Alexander sank back down, clutching his head in his hands. For the first time in his life, the vast glass tower felt like a suffocating cage, and the silence around him was deafening.
