Chapter 6 - Unmasking the Parasite

The fallout from the gala was swift and merciless.
By midnight, photos of the confrontation had gone viral across financial news networks and social media platforms. The headline 'Moretti Empire Faces Liquidity Crisis as Vance Heiress Files for Divorce' dominated Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal. Moretti Group’s stock plunged twenty-two percent at market open, triggering an automatic trading halt.
Alexander sat alone in the penthouse of his estate, surrounded by darkness. The sprawling house was utterly empty. The laughter of his son no longer echoed down the vaulted hallways; the soft melody of Claire playing classical piano in the conservatory was gone, replaced by the sterile hum of the air conditioning.
The front door clicked open. Sophia walked in, looking frantic, holding an armful of legal letters.
""Alexander! What is the meaning of this?!"" she cried, throwing the papers onto his coffee table. ""Your legal team just sent eviction notices to my father’s warehouse! And my personal trust account linked to the Moretti firm has been frozen! You can't do this to me! We've known each other since we were children!""
Alexander slowly looked up from his glass of undiluted scotch. His eyes were hollow, sunken with days of sleeplessness, but for the first time in his life, they saw Sophia Reynolds with crystalline clarity.
""You knew she was Julian Vance's sister, didn't you?"" Alexander asked, his voice dead and emotionless.
Sophia stiffened, her eyes darting toward the entryway. ""What? Of course not! How could I have known—""
""Don't lie to me,"" Alexander said, standing up with terrifying slowness. ""I had my forensic accountants audit the last five years of our foundation’s charity grants. Every time Claire attempted to launch an art foundation or secure a heritage grant through private institutions, your father’s shell company intervened and lobbied against it behind my back. You made sure she stayed isolated. You made sure she felt small, so she wouldn't realize her own power—and so I wouldn't realize what I had right in front of me.""
Sophia’s delicate facade finally shattered, replaced by an ugly, sneering grin. ""And what if I did? You were mine, Alexander! We were supposed to be the golden couple of this city! Then you went and married that plain, boring nobody just because she smiled at you at a gallery! She didn't deserve you! She didn't fit into our world!""
""She owned your world,"" Alexander whispered, shaking his head in self-loathing disgust. ""She had more grace, more wealth, and more integrity in her little finger than your entire pathetic family ever possessed. And I sacrificed her for you. I sacrificed my son for a parasite.""
""Alexander—""
May you like
""Get out,"" Alexander commanded, pointing a trembling finger toward the door. ""If I ever see your face near my property, my office, or my family again, I will personally fund the federal investigation into your father’s tax fraud. Pack your things and leave this city.""
Sophia looked at the unhinged fury burning in his eyes, realized that her golden goose had finally slaughtered itself, and fled into the night without looking back.
