Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Two weeks later, the cold light of a January afternoon streamed through the tall arched windows of Courtroom 402 at the State Metropolitan Courthouse.
I sat at the plaintiff's table, dressed in an immaculate charcoal-gray wool coat and a cream silk blouse. My hair was swept up into an elegant, professional chignon. Beside me sat Arthur Vance and two senior partners from his firm. In the second row of the gallery sat Margaret, holding two-week-old Grace, who slept peacefully inside a cashmere wrap, shielded from the cold.
Across the aisle sat Roman Carter.
The contrast between the man who had checked his watch on Christmas Eve and the shell of a man sitting before the judge was astonishing. His signature designer suit hung loosely on his shoulders, his skin pale and gaunt. His eyes had dark, bruised hollows beneath them, and his hands trembled slightly as he shuffled papers on his desk. His high-priced corporate attorneys were absent, replaced by a weary public defender appointed after his personal assets were frozen under federal court order.
Judge Clara Moreno adjusted her glasses, reviewing the voluminous stack of evidence before her.
""The court has reviewed the forensic audits, the sworn depositions from the board of Carter Holdings, and the supplemental findings from the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network,"" Judge Moreno stated, her voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. ""The documentation demonstrates a systematic, premeditated attempt by the defendant, Roman Carter, to misappropriate intellectual property assets and fraudulently transfer marital funds into unauthorized corporate entities under the name of Claire Bennett.""
Roman tried to stand. ""Your Honor, if I may explain—""
""Sit down, Mr. Carter!"" Judge Moreno snapped, her gavel coming down with a thunderous crack. ""You will speak when you are recognized, and not a moment before.""
Roman sank back into his chair, his jaw clenching as he looked over at me. For the first time, his gaze didn't hold condescension or arrogance. It held sheer, unadulterated terror. He realized that the woman he had dismissed as an emotional invalid was the architect of his total ruin.
""Furthermore,"" Judge Moreno continued, ""the court finds credible, documented evidence of a criminal conspiracy to fabricate medical incompetence against the petitioner, Savannah Carter, for the purpose of coercing parental custody. Such conduct is utterly abhorrent to this court.""
Judge Moreno signed the order before her with a decisive stroke of her pen.
""It is hereby ordered: The marriage between Savannah Carter and Roman Carter is formally dissolved under fault-based grounds of domestic abandonment and criminal fraud. Sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Grace Vance Carter, is awarded exclusively to Savannah Carter, with zero visitation rights granted to the defendant until such time as all pending criminal indictments are fully adjudicated.""

Judge Moreno looked up, her gaze fixing onto Roman like a spotlight. ""All corporate voting rights, real estate holdings in Oakridge, and master intellectual property trusts revert entirely to Mrs. Carter, pursuant to the valid enforcement of Clause 14-B. The defendant is ordered to vacate the marital estate within twenty-four hours, taking only personal clothing.""
The gavel sounded again. ""Court is adjourned.""
