Chapter 2 - The Safe In The Study

The grandfather clock in the foyer chimed ten times. The deep, resonant strikes reverberated through the three-story estate, reminding me that Roman had been gone for exactly forty-eight minutes. In forty-eight minutes, a man could drive to the Aster House, check into his suite, and order vintage champagne while his pregnant wife stood abandoned in a kitchen full of cooling roast chicken.

I didn't head for the front door. Instead, I walked down the long, carpeted corridor leading to Roman’s private study—a soundproofed sanctuary lined with dark oak bookshelves and surveillance monitors. Roman believed that absolute control required absolute secrecy. He kept a biometric safe behind an oil painting of his grandfather, a safe whose contents he guarded more fiercely than his bank accounts.

He assumed I didn't know the access protocol. He had always changed the six-digit keypad sequence on the first of every month, never realizing that the reflective glass on the antique mirror opposite his desk captured every reflection of his hand.

I pushed the painting aside. My fingers hovered over the digital scanner. I pressed my index finger down first; three weeks ago, during an evening when he was half-asleep from single-malt whiskey, I had taken his sleeping thumb to authorize an auxiliary profile under emergency medical overrides. The green light blinked twice. The mechanical lock clicked open with a muted hiss.

Inside lay three thick manila envelopes, two passports, and a hard drive encased in brushed aluminum.

I pulled the first folder onto the desk and opened it. My breath caught in my throat. I had expected to find offshore shell accounts, maybe a secondary trust fund set up in Claire Bennett’s name. I was prepared for greed. I was not prepared for calculated malice.

The folder contained a file prepared by an elite private medical consultancy, stamped with the logo of a private clinic in Zurich. Inside were legal filings for expedited maternal custody, already pre-drafted and dated for the second week of January—right around my scheduled due date. The petition alleged that I suffered from severe postpartum psychosis and prenatal instability, citing fabricated medical evaluations signed by Dr. Ethan Keller—Roman’s personal physician and golf partner.

Roman wasn't just planning an affair; he was orchestrating an execution. He intended to let me deliver our daughter, declare me medically incompetent under the guise of post-birth hormonal distress, lock me into a private recovery sanitarium, and hand the child over to be raised under a court-appointed guardianship managed by Claire Bennett.

A cold, electric fury surged through my veins, obliterating the last trace of sentimentality. The tears that had pricked behind my eyes vanished, replaced by an absolute, diamond-hard clarity. He hadn't just abandoned me tonight; he was setting a trap to steal my baby and strip me of my sanity.

""Savannah, the van is almost loaded,"" Margaret whispered from the doorway, her breath coming in ragged gasps. She clutched a diaper bag and my coat. Then she saw the papers scattered across the desk, her hand flying to her mouth. ""What is that?""

""Evidence of criminal conspiracy,"" I said, my voice deadpan. I pulled out my phone and methodically photographed every single page, every signature, and every forged psychiatric assessment. Next, I took the aluminum hard drive and slipped it directly into my handbag, leaving the paper files neatly arranged on his leather desk pad so he would know with absolute certainty that I had seen them.

""Where are we going?"" Margaret asked, trembling. ""If he tracks the car—""

May you like

""He won't track anything,"" I replied, pulling my woolen coat around my swollen belly. ""Roman thinks he's playing chess against a helpless girl who needs his permission to breathe. He forgets that before my father died, he taught me how to liquidate an empire before the opening bell.""

I walked out of the study, leaving the massive steel safe standing wide open, its hollow interior an ominous prelude to what his life would look like by sunrise.
