Chapter 8 - The Arrival

Labor progressed through the short winter afternoon. Outside, the twilight deepened into a rich cobalt blue, the Christmas lights on the hospital lawn glowing like miniature beacons against the snow.

There was no shouting, no chaotic panic. Every contraction brought me closer to the moment that would define the rest of my life. With every surge of pain, I visualized shedding the skin of the obedient, quiet trophy wife I had pretended to be for four years. Every ache was an exorcism of Roman’s lies, of his condescending tone, of the humiliating memory of him kissing my cheek before walking out to his mistress.

""You're fully dilated, Savannah,"" Dr. Reed announced calmly at 5:20 PM. ""On the next contraction, I need you to give me everything you have.""

Margaret wiped my forehead with a cool, lavender-soaked cloth. ""You can do this, darling. You have your mother’s strength.""

I took a deep, centering breath. When the contraction seized my body, I pushed with every ounce of resolve, every shred of protective fury, and every ounce of maternal instinct I possessed. I wasn't just delivering a child; I was claiming her future.

At 5:42 PM on Christmas Day, the pristine quiet of the room was shattered by a sharp, glorious cry.

Dr. Reed lifted a beautiful, pink, squirming baby girl into the warm light. ""Here she is, Savannah. Look at your daughter.""

Tears, hot and pure, finally broke through my defenses and streamed down my cheeks. Dr. Reed placed her directly onto my bare chest. The moment her tiny, warm skin touched mine, her crying ceased, replaced by soft, curious snuffles as she nestled against my heartbeat.

She had a shock of dark brown hair and tiny, perfect fingers that instantly curled around my thumb.

""Hello, my darling,"" I whispered, my voice breaking with overwhelming love. ""You're safe. You are completely safe.""

""What is her name, Savannah?"" Margaret asked softly, wiping tears from her own eyes.

I looked down at the tiny face resting against my chest. For months, Roman had insisted we name her Victoria, after his maternal grandmother, establishing his family’s claim over her very identity. But Roman no longer had a voice in this room, nor would he ever have one again.

""Her name is Grace,"" I said firmly, smiling through my tears. ""Grace Vance Carter.""

Arthur Vance stepped to the edge of the bed, his eyes glistening as he looked down at the newest heir to the Vance legacy. He pulled out his phone, silenced it, and slipped it back into his jacket pocket.

""A fitting name,"" Arthur said quietly. ""And you'll be pleased to know that Grace has arrived into a completely unencumbered world. Roman Carter’s legal representatives just contacted my office. He has officially surrendered all claims to contest the revocation of the green-tech patents in exchange for our agreement not to push for immediate pretrial detention on the federal wire charges.""

I didn't even look up from Grace’s face. ""Tell them no deals, Arthur. Let the law take its course. He chose his path on Christmas Eve. Now he has to walk it to the end.""
