Chapter 5 - The Morning Collapse

By 6:00 AM on Christmas morning, the world had begun to tear Roman Carter’s reality apart limb by limb.

He hadn't slept a wink. He had spent five frantic hours calling his security team, only to discover that Leo, his most reliable driver, had turned off his company phone and vanished. The estate’s private security cameras had suffered a deliberate electrical loop starting at 9:30 PM the previous evening, leaving behind eight hours of static.

Then his phone began to ring. It wasn't me. It was Julian Cross, the lead portfolio manager of Carter Holdings.

""Roman, what the hell is happening?"" Julian screamed through the speaker, bypassing any holiday greetings. ""Have you checked the European markets?""

Roman rubbed his bloodshot eyes, standing in the middle of his wrecked office. ""What are you talking about, Julian? It’s Christmas morning. The markets are closed.""

""Not in Frankfurt, you idiot! And not the foreign currency exchanges!"" Julian was practically hyperventilating. ""Someone leaked an audit report to Bloomberg and Reuters thirty minutes ago. Every offshore transaction routed through Bennett Logistics has been published with routing numbers and your digital signature! They’re calling it an industrial embezzlement scheme!""

Roman’s knees felt weak. He grabbed the edge of his desk. ""Contain it. Issue a denial. Call our public relations firm—""

""I can't issue a denial because the Vance Trust just filed an emergency injunction in the State Supreme Court!"" Julian yelled. ""Clause 14-B has been triggered, Roman! The clean-tech patents—the core collateral for our debt facility with Deutsche Bank—have been frozen and transferred back to Savannah’s name! The bank has already initiated an automated margin call. They want two hundred and fifty million dollars in cash reserves by noon, or they seize our secondary assets!""

""No,"" Roman gasped, the room tilting around him. ""She doesn't have the legal authority to trigger that clause without my signature on the trust reconciliation.""

""She doesn't need your signature when she has evidence of felony conspiracy and domestic abandonment!"" Julian shouted. ""The board is convening via an encrypted video link right now. If you aren't on that call in ten minutes to explain why your mistress has forty million dollars of company liquidity in a Grand Cayman shell company, they’re voting to strip you of your CEO title!""

Roman dropped the phone onto the desk. The screen continued to light up with incoming notifications, breaking news alerts, and frantic texts from board members he had cultivated for a decade.

A loud knock echoed from the front of the estate.

Roman sprinted downstairs, a desperate hope flaring in his chest that it was me, that I had returned to negotiate, to cry, to let him manipulate me back into silence as he had done so many times before. He yanked open the heavy mahogany front doors.

It wasn't me.

Standing on the snow-covered porch were two uniformed officers from the Oakridge Police Department, accompanied by a woman in a sharp gray suit holding a leather briefcase.

""Roman Carter?"" the woman asked, stepping forward with practiced authority.

""Yes. Who the hell are you?""

""I’m an officer of the family court,"" she said, handing him a thick sheaf of legal documents sealed with an embossed gold stamp. ""You are hereby served with an emergency restraining order and an ex-parte protective custody injunction on behalf of Savannah Carter and your unborn child. You are barred from coming within one thousand feet of Mrs. Carter, any medical facility she enters, or any residence under her name. Furthermore, your domestic accounts have been frozen pending a full forensic accounting hearing.""

Roman stared at the papers, his hands beginning to shake violently. ""Where is she?""

The court officer didn't blink. ""Merry Christmas, Mr. Carter.""
