Chapter 6 - The Broken Mistress

Across the city, in the opulent presidential suite of the Aster House, Claire Bennett woke up to the smell of fresh espresso and the sound of frantic pounding on her suite door.
She smiled to herself, stretching like a cat beneath the silk sheets. She assumed Roman had returned early from dealing with his pathetic, pregnant wife, ready to present her with the holiday diamond bracelet he had promised. She slipped on a velvet robe and walked gracefully to the foyer, checking her reflection in the gilded hallway mirror before unlocking the door.
The door flew inward before she could fully grasp the brass handle.
Roman stumbled into the suite, his hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot, looking like a man who had narrowly escaped an explosion. His coat was half-unbuttoned, his tie gone, his polished exterior completely stripped away.
""Roman?"" Claire gasped, clutching her robe closed. ""What on earth happened to you? Did that little housemouse finally throw a tantrum?""
""Shut up, Claire,"" Roman snarled, slamming the door behind him and leaning his forehead against the cool wood paneling. ""Just shut your mouth.""
""Excuse me?"" Claire’s eyes narrowed, her usual purr sharpening into venom. ""Who do you think you’re speaking to? You promised me we’d be celebrating this morning. The papers for her conservatorship—""
""She knows,"" Roman whispered, spinning around. He grabbed Claire by the arms, his grip bruising. ""She knows everything! She cleaned out the safe! She took the Zurich reports, the Cayman wire slips, the hard drive—all of it!""
Claire went entirely rigid, the color draining from her sculpted face. ""What do you mean she took them? You said she was an idiot! You told me she spent her days arranging flowers and worrying about nursery wallpaper!""
""She played us, Claire!"" Roman yelled, his voice cracking with hysteria. ""The patents are gone. The European banks have called the loans. The police served me with a restraining order on my own front porch an hour ago! The board is holding a vote of no confidence right now!""
Before Claire could respond, her private smartphone buzzed loudly against the marble bedside table.
She pulled herself from Roman’s grip and rushed over to answer it. ""Hello?""
""Miss Claire Bennett?"" a stern, monotone voice asked on the other end.
""Yes. Who is this?""
""This is the Special Investigations Unit of the Federal Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. We are currently executing a federal seizure warrant on accounts registered to Bennett Logistics LLC at First Caribbean Bank. You are advised not to leave the jurisdiction, as an indictment for corporate tax evasion and wire fraud has been submitted for judicial signature.""
Claire’s knees buckled. The phone slipped from her fingers, clattering onto the carpet.
""Roman..."" she choked out, looking at him with sudden horror. ""What did you do? The money... the Cayman accounts...""
""What about them?"" Roman asked, his heart sinking into a bottomless pit.
""They’re frozen,"" she screamed, her face twisting into pure panic. ""The feds are seizing everything! You told me that money was safe! You told me you had the board under your thumb!""
""I did! Until Savannah triggered the moral covenant in the master trust!"" Roman shouted back, tearing his hands through his hair. ""Every single asset tied to Carter Green Tech reverted to her family trust at midnight. I don't own the patents anymore, Claire. I don't even own the chair you’re sitting on!""
The suite door opened without a knock.
May you like
Two federal agents in dark overcoats stood in the entryway, flashing gold badges alongside the hotel manager, who looked terribly embarrassed.
""Roman Carter. Claire Bennett,"" the lead agent said calmly. ""Step away from the luggage, please. We have a search warrant for this suite.""
