Chapter 9 - Cleansing the Empire

With the outside threats completely neutralized, the time had come to purge the rot from within the Moretti syndicate once and for all. That evening, I summoned every regional boss, capo, and lieutenant to the grand subterranean council chamber beneath the historic Moretti estate in Lake Forest. Over fifty heavily armed men sat in absolute silence along the massive mahogany table, their eyes fixed on the empty chair at the head of the room, terrified of the retribution that was sure to follow the discovery of internal treason. Mateo Moretti sat bound to a heavy wooden chair in the center of the hall, stripped of his expensive jewelry and his title, guarded by four elite enforcers with drawn weapons.
I entered the room, holding Joanna’s hand as she walked beside me, carrying our two sons in double leather harness carriers against my chest, while Joanna held our daughter, wrapped in an embroidered silk blanket bearing the golden Moretti crest. The message was clear, unequivocal, and ancient: the dynasty was unified, the bloodline was pure, and any challenge to my family was an act of war against the entire foundation of our organization. I took my seat at the head of the high table, resting my Kimber .45 right beside the ancestral ledger of the family. Joanna sat directly to my right, taking her rightful place as the supreme matriarch whose authority equaled my own.

"Twelve months ago, lies were whispered into my ear by men who broke bread at this very table," I announced, my voice echoing like thunder across the vaulted stone ceiling. "You watched my wife get cast out into the freezing cold, and not one of you had the courage or the honor to investigate the truth. You allowed my uncle, Mateo, to steal my flesh and blood, trading the honor of our ancestors for shipping dock concessions and real estate kickbacks." The capos lowered their heads in collective shame, none daring to meet my piercing gaze. Mateo spat blood onto the floor, glaring up at me with defiant hatred. "Kill me then, nephew! Do it yourself! Let them see what a tyrant you've become for the sake of a weak woman!"
"A tyrant rules through fear, Mateo," I replied calmly, rising from my seat. "A true king protects his blood at all costs. You broke the most sacred oath of this family: you targeted an innocent woman and her children. Therefore, by unanimous decree of the council, your name is stricken from our history. Your assets are forfeited to the trust fund of the three children you tried to destroy, and you will be remanded to a maximum-security black site in the desert where you will spend the remainder of your days in solitary confinement, completely forgotten by the world you tried to rule." Two guards hauled the screaming traitor away, his protests fading down the dark stone corridors until the heavy iron gates slammed shut forever. I turned back to the gathered capos, my hand resting firmly on Joanna’s shoulder. "From this day forth, Joanna speaks with my voice. Anyone who disrespects her, disrespects me. Swear your fealty to your queen, or leave this city before midnight." One by one, every powerful boss in Chicago dropped to one knee, pledging their undying loyalty to Joanna and our children.
