Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Sterling

By sunrise, the story had completely exploded across every major news network, social media platform, and financial paper in the country. Headlines screamed with breathless updates about the sensational downfall of Chicago's elite Sterling dynasty, detailing how Brooke Sterling had orchestrated a fraudulent smear campaign against an innocent young mother to secure a high-society marriage, culminating in federal charges for grand conspiracy and child abduction. Video footage from the downtown charity gala—captured by attendees on their phones—flooded the internet, showing the dramatic moment I exposed Brooke on stage, followed by the undeniable proof of her financial transfers to the corrupt investigator Vernon Pratt. The public’s fury was immediate, overwhelming, and unyielding; within hours, protesters gathered outside the Sterling corporate headquarters demanding justice for Joanna.
Inside the sterile, gray interview room of the Cook County Jail, Brooke sat in an orange jumpsuit, her designer makeup washed away, her hair tangled, and her manicured nails broken from pacing against the concrete walls. The heavy steel door buzzed open, and Joanna walked in, flanked by two armed federal marshals. Joanna was dressed in an impeccably tailored ivory power suit, her golden hair swept back, looking every bit the untouchable matriarch of the Moretti empire. She carried a single manila folder, setting it down calmly on the stainless steel table between them without uttering a word. Brooke lunged forward against her handcuffs, her eyes wild with a mixture of bitter jealousy and desperate panic.

"You think you've won, don't you, you pathetic little nobody?!" Brooke hissed, her voice echoing off the concrete. "Grant will never love you the way he loved his freedom! You'll always be the girl from the wrong side of the tracks who had to crawl through the mud to survive!" Joanna didn't flinch, nor did she raise her voice. She simply leaned forward, her silver-gray eyes locking onto Brooke with an intensity that sucked the oxygen straight out of the room. "I survived the mud because my children gave me a reason to breathe, Brooke. You had billions of dollars, private jets, and every luxury this world could offer, yet your soul was so completely bankrupt that you stole a newborn child just to feel powerful. Look at what's inside that folder."
With trembling, chained hands, Brooke flipped open the document. It was a court-ordered foreclosure deed, followed by an immediate bankruptcy liquidation order signed by three separate federal judges. "Every single penthouse, every commercial tower, and every offshore account bearing the Sterling name has been frozen and seized to settle the multi-million-dollar civil restitution lawsuit filed on behalf of my triplets," Joanna stated with absolute, unshakeable finality. "Your family is ruined. Your father is facing twenty years in federal prison, and you will spend the prime of your life in an eight-by-ten cell. And to make sure you never forget where you belong..." Joanna reached into her designer purse, pulled out a crisp twenty-dollar bill, crumpled it in her fist, and dropped it onto the table right in front of Brooke’s face. "Take this twenty and buy yourself some commissary soap. You're going to need it."
