Chapter 3 - The Gala of Deceit

The crystal chandeliers of the Grand Venetian Ballroom cast a golden, radiant glow over hundreds of Chicago's elite politicians, high-ranking judges, and prominent syndicate capos. At the center of the lavish raised dais stood Brooke Sterling, shimmering in an emerald designer dress that cost more than a family could earn in a lifetime, casually sipping vintage champagne while basking in the fawning admiration of high society. She believed she had won the grand prize: tomorrow morning, she was set to legally marry the wealthiest, most feared mafia boss in the state, absorbing the Moretti fortune into her family's decaying real estate empire. Her laughter was high, mocking, and careless, the very same laughter she had weaponized just hours earlier when tossing a crumpled twenty-dollar bill at a woman struggling to survive in the snow.

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the grand ballroom blasted off their heavy brass hinges with a deafening bang that silenced the string quartet instantly. Gasps and screams of genuine panic rippled across the opulent hall as twelve heavily armed men in full tactical gear secured every exit with surgical precision. Stepping through the smoky doorway, I walked onto the polished Italian marble floor, holding Joanna's arm firmly in mine. She looked radiant, ethereal, yet deadly, her head held high despite the months of grueling misery she had endured, her dark velvet dress contrasting sharply with her pale, aristocratic beauty. Right behind us, two trusted veteran bodyguards pushed baby strollers holding my two twin boys, whose matching silver-gray eyes stared fearlessly at the stunned crowd.

Brooke’s glass slipped from her manicured fingers, shattering on the stage, the sparkling wine splattering her golden heels like tainted blood. "Grant darling... what is the meaning of this horrific circus?" she stammered, attempting to paste a theatrical smile over the rising panic draining the color from her face. "Why did you bring that filthy beggar and those bastards into our celebration?" I did not raise my voice, but the deep, resonant tone of my command filled every corner of the vast room, causing powerful politicians and ruthless capos to lower their eyes in terror. "You dropped twenty dollars for milk this morning, Brooke," I said, taking steady, deliberate steps toward the stage until I was standing inches from her trembling figure. "You told her to feed her starving brats. But you forgot to mention that you manufactured every shred of evidence that sent her into that freezing cold, all while stealing my firstborn daughter from her mother's arms."

Murmurs of utter shock erupted among the assembled mafia families, whose ancient codes strictly forbade harming innocent women and children. Brooke backed away, bumping hard against the decorated ice sculpture behind her, her eyes darting frantically toward the VIP section where my trusted consigliere and uncle, Mateo Moretti, sat sipping whiskey in silence. "That's absurd! You're insane! Vernon Pratt was the investigator, not me!" she shrieked, her voice cracking under the crushing pressure. At that moment, Marco dragged a battered, bleeding Vernon Pratt into the center of the ballroom, throwing a thick stack of bank ledgers and audio recordings directly at the feet of the district attorney. "Every offshore transaction bears your digital key, Brooke," I whispered, leaning down so only she could hear the promise of her impending doom. "And before this night ends, you will tell me exactly where my daughter is, or you will beg for the cold pavement my wife had to walk."
