Chapter 4 - The Viper at the High Table

The ballroom descended into an uproar as the district attorney hurriedly flipped through the waterproof folders containing concrete proof of money laundering, wire fraud, and the brutal kidnapping conspiracy. Brooke collapsed onto the steps of the stage, her manicured fingers clawing at the hem of my trousers, sobbing uncontrollably. "Grant, please, it wasn't supposed to go that far! I only wanted Joanna gone so you would finally look at me! The baby... the baby was never my idea! He promised he would handle the rest!" Her trembling hand pointed past me, aiming directly at the VIP table where my uncle, Mateo Moretti, remained sitting entirely undisturbed, swirling the amber liquid in his crystal glass with infuriating serenity.
Mateo had been my father’s youngest brother, the man who had guided me through the bloody power struggles following my father’s untimely death a decade ago. He was the architect of my empire's legal fronts, the calm intellectual who rarely touched a firearm but controlled the shipping docks along the Great Lakes. Slowly, Mateo set his glass down, wiped his mouth with a crisp linen napkin, and offered a soft, dismissive smile that chilled the room far more than any raised gun ever could. "You were always too sentimental, Grant," Mateo murmured, his voice smooth, calculating, and free of remorse. "Just like your father. You allowed a woman from a humble background to soften your edges, to make you hesitate when rival syndicates encroached upon our territory. A true mafia king needs an iron heart, not a brood of crying children."

"You signed the order," I said, my voice dead, flat, and hollow with the terrible burden of realization. The seal on the document wasn't an external enemy's mark; it was the private insignia of the Moretti Council, a relic only two men living possessed. "You took my daughter from the clinic before she could even take her first breath of her mother's air." Mateo stood up smoothly, adjusting the lapels of his custom tuxedo, seemingly unbothered by the twenty assault rifles now swiveling to train their laser sights directly on his chest. "I didn't kill her, Grant. I am not an animal. I merely secured our family’s future. An empire divided among three heirs is an empire ripe for civil war. The boys can be molded into loyal soldiers, but a daughter? A daughter is a vulnerability. She was placed somewhere safe, somewhere you would never look, raised under a false name until she could be used to cement a treaty when the time was right."
Joanna stepped forward, breaking away from the guards, her eyes blazing with an unholy wrath that silenced the entire hall. "Where is she, Mateo? Tell me where my baby is, or I swear to God I will tear your throat out with my bare hands!" Mateo glanced at her with cold disdain, an arrogance born of decades of untouchable privilege. "Kill me, and the location dies with me. The caretakers have standing orders: if I miss my midnight check-in, the child is moved across international borders, beyond the reach of your private jets and your dirty money." I glanced at the antique grandfather clock chiming against the ballroom wall. It was eleven-fifteen. We had forty-five minutes before my daughter disappeared into the untraceable underworld of global trafficking forever.
