Chapter 5 - Forty-Five Minutes to Midnight

The ballroom became an operational war room within seconds. My loyal enforcers cleared the terrified socialites and corrupt politicians from the premises, locking down every exit to ensure no information leaked to the outside world. Brooke Sterling was dragged away in zip-ties by federal agents who had long waited for an excuse to dismantle her family's illicit real estate shell companies, her hysterical screams echoing down the marble corridors until the heavy doors slammed shut behind her. Mateo sat handcuffed to an iron support pillar beneath the grand balcony, his expression smug, his eyes fixed on the sweeping second hand of his expensive wristwatch. He believed his leverage made him invincible, confident that the ticking clock would force me into signing over full control of the Great Lakes shipping ports in exchange for coordinates.
"Boss, all his private phones are encrypted with biometric locks linked to his heartbeat," Marco reported, wiping sweat from his forehead as our technical crew worked frantically over glowing laptop terminals. "If he dies or goes unconscious, the fail-safe triggers, and the scrub protocol wipes the servers hosting the safe house addresses." I walked over to Mateo, kneeling until our faces were inches apart. "You think you know me, Uncle. You think because I loved Joanna, I forgot the brutality my father taught me in the basements of Palermo." I didn't reach for a blade or a gun; instead, I brought Joanna forward, accompanied by our two sons. She held them out so Mateo could see the innocent, wide-eyed faces of his own grand-nephews, children he had condemned to freeze in the slums.

"Look at them, Mateo," Joanna said, her voice steady and razor-sharp, devoid of the tears that had blurred her vision hours ago. "They survived your cold. They survived your hitmen. And the little girl you stole carries the exact same blood. Do you really believe the men you paid twenty thousand dollars to guard her will stay loyal when the entire Chicago underworld knows you’re finished?" I signaled Marco, who dialed a loudspeaker patch directly to the dockworkers' union hall and the precinct captains across Cook County. Within three minutes, every capo who had pledged allegiance to Mateo appeared on the video wall, bound and kneeling in their own warehouses. I had spent the last hour systematically dismantling his private network from the roots up.
Mateo's smug smile finally began to waver, a bead of cold sweat forming along his hairline as he realized his empire had vanished beneath him in less than thirty minutes. "You... you burned your own shipping revenue to corner me?" he whispered, his voice trembling for the first time. "I don't give a damn about the money, Mateo," I snarled, grabbing his jaw in an iron grip. "I own this city, and I can rebuild a fortune in a year. But you touch my family, and I will burn every brick of Chicago to the ground just to find the ashes of the man who hurt them. You have three minutes before I authorize the complete liquidation of your bloodline's trusts, leaving your own grandchildren penniless on the same streets where Joanna dragged scrap iron. Where is my daughter?!" Defeated, his arrogant pride crumbling beneath the terrifying weight of my total ruthlessness, Mateo finally lowered his head and whispered an address off the shores of Lake Forest.
