Chapter 2 - Blood on the Snow

Joanna’s weeping filled the damp, frozen air of the ruined cabin, a sound so profoundly wounded that my hardened bodyguards outside bowed their heads in shame, keeping their vigil against the howling storm. I reached out, my hands trembling as I wrapped my heavy cashmere coat around her frail, shivering shoulders. She didn't push me away this time; she had exhausted every ounce of her physical and emotional strength trying to survive a brutal Chicago winter on scrap pennies while shielding two infants from starvation. The twin boys had quieted down, their large, piercing gray eyes staring intently at me from beneath frayed beanies, watching the stranger who shared their exact features. I gathered both of my sons into my arms, the sheer warmth of their fragile heartbeats breaking through the cold armor I had worn around my heart for so long.
"They took her right from the delivery table, Grant," Joanna gasped between ragged sobs, her hollow cheeks wet with hot tears as she leaned into my chest for warmth she had been denied for an entire year. "A private clinic off 47th Street. The doctor told me she was stillborn, that her lungs never opened... but I heard her tiny cry before the nurse whisked her through the back door. Then Vernon Pratt arrived with armed guards, warning me that if I ever spoke a word to you, or ever tried to look for my baby, he would make sure the twins vanished into Lake Michigan." Rage, dark and absolute, surged through every vein in my body, threatening to tear my control apart. My fiancé, Brooke Sterling, had orchestrated not just an adulterous smear campaign to secure her seat as the queen of Chicago's underworld, but an unspeakable theft of my own flesh and blood.

Marco entered the ruined cabin, his radio buzzing quietly with updates from our surveillance perimeter. "Boss, we swept the phones on the downed hitters. The operational orders came from a burner registered to the downtown Sterling Plaza penthouse suite. Brooke is currently hosting a high-society charity gala to celebrate your upcoming wedding, completely unaware that we caught Vernon Pratt alive." A chilling, lethal grin spread across my lips as I stood tall, carefully strapping both baby carriers securely to my tactical vest before extending my hand to Joanna. "The gala is about to receive an unexpected guest of honor," I said, my voice echoing with ruthless authority. "No more hiding in alleyways, Joanna. Tonight, Chicago remembers who you are, and Brooke Sterling will pay for every single tear you shed."
We loaded into the fortified convoy, speeding through the blinding snow toward the glittering towers of downtown Chicago. As the vehicle carved through the frost, my doctors tended to Joanna in the rear compartment, cleaning her wounds, rehydrating her frail body, and dressing her in an elegant, midnight-black velvet gown that had been rushed from my private estate. My sons, fed warm formula and swaddled in genuine baby cashmere, fell asleep against my chest, safe within the impenetrable steel walls of my convoy. Yet my mind remained consumed by the mystery of the handwritten order in Vernon's safe. Brooke had the jealousy and the money, but she lacked the operational reach within my inner circle to authorize a black-market abduction. There was a viper sitting at my high table, someone who had whispered poison into my ear while stealing my daughter to use as ultimate leverage against my empire.
