Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The aftermath was swift, brutal, and total.
With the federal charges locked in place and the live video of Derek lunging at Lena broadcast across every major network in North America, Cole Capital Partners completely disintegrated within forty-eight hours. The board of directors declared bankruptcy, liquidating the firm’s assets to pay off crushing debts. Derek's trust fund was frozen by court order to guarantee future restitution for Lena’s medical bills and destroyed property.
A week later, Lena sat across a polished table in a private visiting room at the Metropolitan Correctional Center. Behind the reinforced glass sat Derek Cole, stripped of his bespoke suits, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit that made his sallow skin look sickly. His wrists were chained to his waist.
""You look pathetic, Derek,"" Lena said, her voice completely devoid of fear.
Derek glared at her with bitter, impotent hatred. ""You think you won? You traded me for an old mob boss who will discard you the second he gets bored. Vale is a monster, Lena.""
Lena smiled faintly, shaking her head. ""Adrian Vale gave me my voice back. He gave me my dignity back. He protected me without asking for a single dollar, while you took everything I earned and beat me in dark rooms."" She leaned closer to the glass. ""The judge denied your bail this morning. You’re facing fifteen to twenty-five years in state prison for federal arson and extortion. You will spend your thirties and forties in a concrete cell, Derek. And nobody is coming to save you.""
Derek lunged against the chains, screaming, but two correctional guards seized him by the shoulders, wrenching him backward into the corridor. The heavy steel door slammed shut, cutting off his screams forever.
Lena stood up, smoothed her coat, and walked out into the crisp autumn sunshine.
Waiting at the curb was the sleek black sedan. Marcus opened the door with a warm, respectful smile. ""Home, Miss Hart?""
""Yes, Marcus. Take me home.""
When she arrived back at the penthouse on Lake Shore, Adrian was standing on the expansive terrace, watching the white sails cutting across the blue water of Lake Michigan. He turned as she stepped through the glass doors, his expression softening in a way that only happened when they were alone.
""It is finished?"" Adrian asked.
""It's completely finished,"" Lena replied, stepping into his open arms.

Adrian wrapped his coat around her, pulling her against his broad chest. Lena rested her cheek against his lapel—the very spot she had grabbed in desperation at the gala nine days earlier. ""You are completely free, Lena. Your PR firm has been fully restored in a new building downtown. The deed is registered solely in your name. You can walk out that door whenever you choose.""
Lena looked up at him, her fingers tangling in the thick hair at the nape of his neck. ""I spent two years being a prisoner, Adrian. I know what freedom feels like. And freedom is choosing to stay right here with you.""
