Chapter 8 - The Press Conference Trap

The Grand Ballroom of the historic Drake Hotel was packed by 6:00 AM. Word of the midnight arsons, combined with the explosive rumors linking hedge-fund prodigy Derek Cole to mob ties and domestic terrorism, had brought every major news network in the state scrambling for position. Microphones bristled on the podium like a metal porcupine.
Adrian stood in the private mezzanine box above, dressed in a charcoal three-piece suit, watching the room with hawk-like intensity. Below, plainclothes federal marshals and Adrian's private operators blended seamlessly into the crowd of reporters and photographers.
Lena walked out onto the stage at 6:15 AM sharp.
She looked breathtaking. She wore an elegant, high-collared navy dress that concealed every healing mark on her body, but she wore no jewelry. Her hair was pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail. She looked like what she was: a brilliant, fearless communications executive who refused to be silenced by money or intimidation.
The room erupted with camera flashes.
""Good morning,"" Lena spoke into the microphones, her voice commanding the entire hall into instant silence. ""Two years ago, I entered a relationship with Derek Cole. Over the course of twenty-four months, that relationship transformed into a systematic campaign of domestic abuse, financial coercion, and criminal stalking.""
A collective murmur rolled through the journalists. Lena didn't flinch. She gestured to the massive digital screens flanking the stage.
""These are the medical records from Central DuPage Hospital documenting broken ribs from November 2nd. These are the audio recordings of Mr. Cole threatening my life. And these,"" she paused as new images appeared on the screens, ""are surveillance stills from three hours ago showing Mr. Cole’s vehicle fleeing the scene of an arson attack against my commercial offices.""
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open with a deafening crash.
""She’s lying! She’s a paid extortionist!""
Derek burst into the hall, his hair disheveled, his eyes bloodshot and crazed. He was clutching a manila envelope, completely unhinged. He had bypassed the outer lobby using a service key he had stolen from his family’s catering connections. ""Shut the cameras off! She's working for Adrian Vale! She's trying to destroy my family!""
Reporters gasped, scrambling to turn their lenses toward the frantic billionaire heir.
Lena didn't run. She didn't flinch. She stayed right behind the podium, looking down at him from the elevated stage with cold, absolute disgust. ""I am not hiding behind anyone, Derek. You are the one who ran into the dark to burn buildings like a coward.""
Derek lunged toward the stage, screaming obscenities, raising his arm as if to strike her down in front of the press corps. ""You ruined me, you bitch!""

Before he could take three steps down the aisle, four undercover federal agents tackled him to the carpet with crushing force. Derek’s head hit the floor with a dull thud as handcuffs ratcheted around his wrists.
From the mezzanine above, Adrian stepped forward to the brass railing, looking down at the squirming heir with supreme indifference. Flashbulbs illuminated Derek’s face as Captain Rossi knelt beside him, reading him his constitutional rights for arson, felony stalking, and aggravated assault on live television.
