Chapter 2 - The Fortress on Lake Shore

Derek let out a harsh, mocking laugh, though his eyes darted nervously between Adrian's towering frame and the two security operatives blocking his path. ""You think this is funny, Lena? If you walk out of this charity ball with this lunatic, do not even think about returning to my penthouse. Everything you own stays with me!""
Adrian barely spared him a sideways glance. ""That sounds like the best advice you've received in years, Miss Hart.""
Turning his back on Derek Cole entirely—a calculated insult that turned the younger man's face purple with humiliation—Adrian guided Lena through the velvet-roped side exit of the ballroom. His touch remained impeccably respectful, resting flat against the small of her back just enough to keep her from stumbling on her silver heels. A sleek, armored midnight-black sedan pulled silently to the curb the moment they stepped into the bitter November air.
A driver with graying temples held the door wide. ""Good evening, Mr. Vale.""
""Straight to Lake Shore, Marcus. Take the lower drive. Ensure our young friend doesn’t get any romantic ideas about following,"" Adrian ordered evenly.
Lena slipped into the warm, leather-scented sanctuary of the vehicle. For the first time in twenty-four months, she wasn't sharing a confined space with a predator. Yet the sheer reality of what she had done began to crash down upon her chest like an avalanche. She had traded a violent, vindictive hedge-fund heir for a shadowy syndicate titan who held half the Midwest's underground infrastructure in his palm. What had she traded her soul for?
Adrian settled into the spacious seat opposite her, crossing his long legs with casual poise. The streetlights flickered rhythmically across his angular, weathered face, catching the silver threading through his dark hair. He did not touch her, nor did he lean into her space. He simply sat there, radiating an ancient, unshakeable calm.
""You're in shock,"" Adrian remarked, his voice a low, gravelly baritone.
Lena wrapped her bare arms around herself, shivering uncontrollably despite the heated leather. ""I don't know what I was thinking. I just... I saw him coming toward me in the crowd, and I knew what he would do once we were in the elevator. He always hurts me where nobody can see. I just couldn't take another night of it.""
""You don't need to justify your survival to me,"" Adrian replied calmly. He reached into a small console, pulled out a heavy cashmere lap blanket, and placed it across her knees without making physical contact. ""You asked for sanctuary. You have it.""
""I don't have any money to pay you,"" Lena said, tears finally spilling over her dark lashes. ""Derek controlled my bank accounts. He made me sign direct deposits into a joint fund six months ago. He tracks my phone with GPS. I have nothing except the dress I rented for this stupid gala.""
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly, cold fire flickering behind his dark irises. ""Give Marcus your phone.""
Lena blinked, pulling the gold device from her clutch. She handed it forward through the partition. Marcus took it, cracked the glass casing with a heavy handheld tool, removed the SIM card, and dropped the remnants into a signal-blocking metal case beneath the dashboard.
""Tomorrow morning, you will have your own accounts, your own devices, and your own identity restored,"" Adrian said smoothly. ""As for payment, Miss Hart, I do not charge women for keeping them alive. Derek Cole’s father made his fortune shorting logistics contracts against my parent company a decade ago. The Cole family already owes me an astronomical debt. Consider your freedom the interest on that balance.""
The car turned through a set of iron security gates into a heavily guarded courtyard overlooking Lake Michigan. It was a private penthouse fortress, complete with perimeter cameras and private elevator access. When the doors opened to a sprawling two-story foyer lined with bookshelves, Lena stopped dead in her tracks.

""This is ridiculous,"" she whispered, shaking her head. ""Derek has police connections. He has lawyers on retainer who bury people for fun. He’s going to come after me with everything he has.""
Adrian turned to face her, his expression cold and unyielding. ""Let him try. In this city, lawyers argue over rules. I happen to own the ground the courthouse stands on.""
