Chapter 4 - Playing With Fire

By Sunday afternoon, the city’s rumor mill had caught fire. Derek Cole was spiraling publicly, posting frantic social media videos accusing Adrian Vale of kidnapping, only to have the posts deleted within minutes by platform moderation teams that Adrian’s digital security specialists quietly managed.

Adrian didn’t keep Lena locked inside like a prisoner. Instead, he took her to his downtown office towers, placing her directly in executive strategy sessions. Lena had a brilliant mind for crisis communications—that had been her job before Derek systematically dismantled her self-confidence. Within forty-eight hours, she wasn't just hiding behind Adrian; she was coordinating the public relations offensive that was cutting Derek off from his country-club allies.

""Look at this statement his board of directors released,"" Lena pointed out, leaning over Adrian’s heavy oak desk in his 40th-floor boardroom. Her eyes were brighter now, the dull shadow of terror fading into sharp, focused adrenaline. ""They’re distancing themselves from Derek’s personal conduct. If we leak the security footage from the gala lobby—where he grabs my wrist—his corporate sponsors will cancel their annual contracts by nightfall.""

Adrian watched her closely, a flicker of genuine admiration crossing his stern features. ""You are not just surviving, Lena. You are hunting.""

""He took two years of my life,"" she said, her voice steady. ""He made me believe I was crazy, worthless, and weak. I want him to know that I was the one who pulled the pin on his grenade.""

Adrian stood up, walking around the desk until he was standing just inches from her. The proximity made Lena’s breath catch in her throat. At forty-nine, Adrian possessed a raw, magnetic masculinity that had nothing to do with Derek’s boyish vanity. He was weathered, scarred, and completely self-assured.

""You have your own teeth, little bird,"" Adrian murmured, his voice sending a shiver through her spine. ""I am merely the cage that Derek cannot break.""

Before Lena could answer, Marcus knocked sharply on the heavy double doors, entering with a grim expression. ""Sir, we have a situation downstairs. Derek Cole just entered the parking garage with four men. One of them is Richard Vance.""

Lena went rigid. Richard Vance was Derek’s uncle—a disgraced former state senator who still maintained deep ties to the city’s corrupt union enforcers. Derek wasn’t just throwing legal tantrums anymore; he had brought street muscle to Adrian’s front door.

""He brought Vance?"" Adrian asked, his voice disturbingly calm.

""Yes, sir. They bypassed the lower gate by using a forged delivery badge. They are demanding to see Miss Hart in the private freight staging area.""

Lena felt the old panic clawing at her throat. ""Adrian, Vance is insane. He was investigated for witness tampering three years ago. If they have guns—""

Adrian laid a single, steady hand on her shoulder. The heat of his palm anchored her instantly. ""Lena, listen to me carefully. Derek brought street thugs into my house because he is desperate and stupid. He thinks I am an old businessman who hides behind lawyers."" Adrian reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a sleek, minimalist radio, clicking the channel. ""Victor. Seal the freight bay doors. Nobody leaves until I arrive.""

He turned back to Lena, offering his arm with supreme elegance. ""Shall we go introduce your ex-boyfriend to reality?""
