Chapter 6 - Unraveling the Web

The confrontation in the basement shattered Derek’s facade forever. Within twenty-four hours, Richard Vance abandoned his nephew entirely, fleeing to Florida after Adrian’s legal team quietly delivered a thumb drive containing decade-old federal bribery wiretaps directly to the United States Attorney’s Office.
Stripped of his family's political shield, Derek was completely isolated.
Back in the penthouse, Lena sat on the plush sofa with a laptop on her knees, watching the financial news tick by on the wall-mounted screen. Cole Capital was imploding. Investors were pulling tens of millions of dollars out of Derek’s funds after major outlets leaked internal emails detailing his erratic behavior, workplace harassment, and blatant embezzlement to cover personal gambling debts.
""You did that,"" Adrian said, walking in with two glasses of vintage red wine. He handed one to Lena, his fingers brushing against hers. A pleasant jolt of electricity surged through her arm.
""We did it,"" Lena corrected, taking a slow sip. ""It's terrifying how quickly a monster shrinks when someone finally turns on the lights.""
Adrian sat down beside her, his presence warm and commanding. ""Bullies are inherently cowards, Lena. They only operate when their victims are isolated. Once you pulled back the curtain, Derek had nothing left to fight with except hollow screams.""
Lena looked down at the dark red wine in her glass, feeling an overwhelming wave of gratitude mixed with something far more intense. For days, she had been operating on pure survival instinct. Now, as the dust began to settle, she was acutely aware of the man sitting next to her. Adrian had never once pressured her, never demanded physical affection, and never treated her like an asset to be collected. He treated her like an equal—a woman of intellect, grit, and purpose.
""Why didn't you let them arrest him right there in the garage?"" Lena asked softly.
Adrian turned his head, his dark eyes studying every line of her face. ""Because a quick arrest gives a coward an audience and a trial where his lawyers can drag your name through the mud for another two years. I wanted him financially ruined, socially radioactive, and utterly broken first. When the police finally put handcuffs on Derek Cole, he will be too bankrupt to afford bail.""
Lena set her wine glass on the coffee table. She turned her body toward him, the distance between them shrinking to inches. ""You're twenty-two years older than me, Adrian.""
A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. ""I am well aware of the gray in my hair, Lena. You are twenty-seven, brilliant, and you have your entire life ahead of you. Once this storm passes, you are free to go anywhere in the world. Paris, London, Tokyo. I will fund your firm, buy your townhouse, and ensure nobody ever touches you again.""
Lena reached out, her hand resting firmly against his jaw. His stubble was rough against her soft palm. ""What if I don't want to go to Paris?"" she whispered.
Adrian’s breath hitched. For the first time since she had met him, the unflappable titan looked vulnerable. ""Lena, you have been through trauma. You don't owe me anything. You don't need to conflate gratitude with—""

""I kissed you in that ballroom to save my life,"" Lena interrupted, her eyes blazing with fierce certainty. ""I'm kissing you now because I want to.""
She leaned in, closing the gap between them. When her lips touched his, Adrian groaned softly, his composure cracking as his arms wrapped securely around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest.
