Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Dark

The underground freight staging area was cavernous, smelling of exhaust fumes, damp concrete, and ozone. Rain poured outside the heavy steel shutters, sending echoes rippling through the shadows.
Derek stood beside a black SUV, flanked by three burly men in leather coats. Standing slightly behind him was Richard Vance, a sixty-year-old with a slicked-back gray haircut and a sneer etched onto his face. When the private industrial elevator pinged and the steel doors slid open, Derek stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Lena with predatory rage.
""Lena! Get over here right now!"" Derek shouted, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. ""You think you can hide behind this old mobster? You stole my life, you ungrateful little bitch!""
Adrian stepped out of the elevator first, his hands tucked casually into the pockets of his slacks. Lena walked beside him, her chin held high, refusing to look down at the floor as she used to.
""You are trespassing on private industrial property, Derek,"" Adrian said evenly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the expanse. ""In Illinois, entering a secured logistics facility without clearance carries a ten-year mandatory minimum. And that is assuming you survive the encounter.""
Richard Vance spat on the floor and stepped forward, unbuttoning his overcoat to reveal a holstered firearm. ""Cut the theatrical crap, Vale. You don't own this town anymore. My people still run the transit boards. Derek is taking the girl, and you’re going to release the customs hold on our shipping containers, or I’ll have state investigators crawling through your warehouses by morning.""
Adrian didn't even blink. He didn't look at Vance’s gun. Instead, he raised a single finger toward the rafters.
Instantly, four laser sights snapped onto Richard Vance’s chest, glowing crimson against the fabric of his coat. Two more red dots hovered steadily over Derek’s forehead. From behind the concrete support pillars, six heavily armed security operators stepped out of the shadows, their suppressed tactical rifles held in combat-ready positions.
Derek gasped, his hands flying into the air as all the color drained from his face. ""Uncle Richard—what is this?!""
""Shut up!"" Vance hissed, his cocky grin freezing into a mask of pure terror. He knew the difference between posturing and real military contractors. The men surrounding them weren't street muscle; they were veterans trained for wet work.
Adrian took three slow, deliberate steps toward Derek. Derek cowered backward against the hood of his SUV, trembling so hard his teeth chattered audibly.
""You came into my facility to threaten a woman who rejected you,"" Adrian said, his voice dropping into a register so dark it made the hair on Lena's neck stand up. ""You put your hands on her wrist. You broke her ribs in Naperville. Did you think nobody was keeping count, Derek?""
""I... I didn't mean to—she drove me crazy, Mr. Vale! You don't know what she's like!"" Derek babbed, completely disintegrating into tears.
Adrian stopped inches from Derek's nose. ""If you ever look in her direction again, if you ever type her name, if you even dream of breathing the same air she breathes, I will not call the police. I will simply dismantle everything your family owns, and then I will give the deed of your father’s estate to Lena to burn for firewood. Do you understand me?""
May you like
Derek could only nod frantically, sobbing against the metal of his car.
""Now take your uncle and crawl back into your hole,"" Adrian whispered. ""The countdown on your life begins tonight.""
