Chapter 8 - The Queen’s Gambit

Forty Wall Street and the Chicago Financial Center were in complete disarray. At 2:00 PM on a Tuesday, forty-two executive board members of Moretti Global Holdings dialed into an emergency encrypted video conference. Whispers filled the virtual room. Rumors of armed assaults, federal raids, and the arrest of the Sinclair family had wiped three billion dollars off the company’s market cap that morning.

Arthur Vance sat in a private terminal lounge at Gary Airport, sweating profusely through his bespoke Italian suit. His laptop sat open on a marble table while armed federal marshals paced outside the glass doors, awaiting final paperwork to breach his private hangar. Arthur believed he still had time to authorize the offshore wire transfers if he could force an emergency shareholder vote to liquidate the assets before the marshals arrested him.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Arthur announced loudly into his webcam, adjusting his gold spectacles. “As senior vice president and acting chairman, I must formally declare Dante Moretti unfit to lead due to the violent security catastrophe at his estate last night. We must immediately vote to freeze the core assets and transfer operational stewardship to the senior executive council!”

“Is that so, Arthur?” a smooth, resonant voice cut through the feed.

The main tile on the screen expanded.

Sitting before a high-definition lens was Dante Moretti, pristine in a navy three-piece suit, sitting beside a hospital bed. But beside him, propped up against plush white pillows, wrapped in an elegant silk robe with her infant daughter sleeping peacefully in her arms, was Isabella Moretti.

The entire board went dead silent.

Arthur’s mouth fell open. “Isabella? What is the meaning of this mockery? This is an executive board meeting, not a family nursery!”

“Silence, Arthur,” Dante said coldly, leaning back in his chair. “You are speaking to the majority owner of this enterprise.”

Isabella adjusted Victoria against her chest, looking directly into the camera with an unshakeable poise that commanded absolute authority.

“Good afternoon, members of the board,” Isabella spoke, her tone melodic yet carrying the weight of iron. “At 1:15 PM today, federal prosecutors unsealed the indictments against Victor and Vanessa Sinclair. Included in those indictments are sworn audio confessions and encrypted bank ledgers linking Mr. Vance to corporate espionage, grand theft, and accessory to attempted murder.”

Gasps erupted across the digital conference. Several board members leaned close to their screens in disbelief.

“That’s slander! Lies from a hysterical girl!” Arthur shrieked, slamming his fist onto the table.

“On your screens now,” Isabella continued smoothly, pressing a button on her tablet, “you will see the transaction trail showing Arthur Vance routing four hundred million dollars from our pediatric cancer foundation into dummy corporations in Panama. Furthermore, by virtue of my fifty-one percent voting majority, I hereby terminate Arthur Vance’s employment, revoke his pension, freeze all stock options, and turn over all internal server logs to the federal marshals currently standing outside his terminal door.”

On Arthur’s camera feed, the heavy glass doors behind him shattered. Six federal marshals burst in with weapons drawn.

“Arthur Vance! Hands above your head! Do not touch the keyboard!” an agent shouted.

Arthur turned pale as ash. He knocked his chair over as he was thrown against the marble floor, handcuffs snapping around his wrists in full view of forty-two top executives. The laptop screen flickered and went dark as an agent closed it.

Isabella turned back to the remaining board members, her voice steady and resolute.

“Moretti Holdings will not be broken by cowards or traitors. Starting tomorrow, we are establishing a five-hundred-million-dollar fund for community healthcare and worker protection. Production across all domestic facilities will resume at sunrise. If anyone on this board has an objection to a former waitress running this company... speak now.”

Silence stretched across the call for five breathless seconds.

Then, one by one, the oldest and most conservative board members began to applaud. Within moments, the entire screen was filled with standing ovations.
