Chapter 1 - The Broken Vow

“She took my place,” Isabella whispered, each word cutting deeper than any blade Dante Moretti had faced in Chicago’s brutal underworld. “And you never even noticed.”
Dante Moretti had made entire boardrooms weep and ruthless syndicate bosses beg for mercy. At thirty-eight, his word was law, his fortune virtually limitless, and his influence untouchable. Yet standing inside his vast master bedroom on a bitter December night, the billionaire looked utterly shattered.
It was not because of the federal agents circling his perimeter or rival families plotting his downfall. It was because his heavily pregnant wife was staring at him as if he were a complete stranger.
Isabella stood inches away in an ivory gown that draped over her full curves and swollen belly. Chestnut curls tumbled around her flushed face. Tears cut jagged paths through her makeup. One hand instinctively protected their unborn daughter, while the other clenched Dante’s lapel just to remain upright.
Behind them lingered Vanessa Sinclair. Tall, blonde, and dripping with poise, Vanessa wore a crimson silk dress, an eye-catching ruby pendant, and the custom diamond bracelet Dante had commissioned for Isabella’s fifth wedding anniversary. Vanessa rotated her wrist slowly under the chandelier, catching the light.
Thirty minutes prior, Isabella had stood at the landing of the grand staircase, watching high society sip vintage champagne. For months, society columns had mocked her. They called her an ordinary diner waitress who trapped an empire heir. They whispered she was too soft, too loud, too sentimental, and now, far too fat. Isabella had spent years working grueling double shifts to afford her mother Rose’s chemotherapy. She knew hardship, but watching Vanessa whisper into Dante’s ear downstairs while Dante nodded silently had ripped her heart open.
“Take it off,” Dante commanded now, his voice dropping into a deadly register. His obsidian eyes pinned Vanessa.
Vanessa’s smirk wavered. “Dante, be serious. The press is downstairs—”
“Take off my wife’s bracelet. Now.” Dante took a step toward her, radiating pure menace. “I said the Sinclair family needed to appear aligned with Moretti Holdings for tonight’s merger announcement. I never told you to rifle through my private quarters and steal an anniversary gift meant for my wife.”
Vanessa flushed scarlet, unhooking the diamonds with trembling fingers and dropping them onto the marble dresser. “It was sitting right beside the note!”
“Because I had the diamonds reset with our daughter’s birthstone inside the clasp,” Dante said coldly. “And the ruby necklace you’re wearing? I never bought that. You bought it yourself to stage this pathetic charade.”
Vanessa scoffed, attempting to save face. “Does it matter? Isabella doesn't belong in this world, Dante! Look at her! She can barely stand the pressure of a single gala, let alone what happens after midnight!”
“Get out,” Dante growled. “Leave this house before I have Marco throw you into the snow.”
Vanessa sneered, gathered her skirts, and stormed out, her stilettos clacking sharply down the marble corridor.
Isabella stood frozen. Her hand dropped from Dante’s jacket.
“Bella,” Dante pleaded, reaching out. “The bracelet was a surprise. The merger required Vanessa’s father’s signature to dissolve our final ties with their cartel. That’s why she was here. It was business.”
“It’s always business, Dante!” Isabella wept, stepping backward. “You think this is just about a bracelet? She knows what happens at midnight. She knows why you leave before sunrise. She walks through our halls like she owns you, and I have to beg your driver to tell me if you’re coming home alive!”
Dante tried to close the gap, but Isabella pressed her hand against his chest, refusing his touch.
“I didn’t marry the billionaire kingpin,” she whispered, her chest heaving. “I married the bleeding man who sat beside me on a freezing hospital floor for six hours eating half my turkey sandwich. You said no one had ever cared if you were hungry before.”
“I remember, Bella,” he choked out. “I remember every second.”
“Then why have I been completely alone for three months?”
Before Dante could answer, the bedroom doors burst open. Marco Bell, pale and clutching a secure radio, looked frantic.
“Boss, we have a catastrophic breach,” Marco barked. “The Sinclair family didn’t come to sign the merger. Victor Sinclair just locked down the perimeter gates, cut our auxiliary power, and took the ballroom hostage. And Vanessa just announced to the press that you’ve been declared medically incapacitated under a forged proxy.”

A sudden, sharp spasm seized Isabella’s lower abdomen. She gasped, doubling over as a wave of white-hot agony tore through her womb. Her water had just broken, four weeks early, in the middle of a hostile takeover.
