Chapter 4 - Born in the Crossfire

The roar of helicopter blades rattled the balcony glass just as the room shook from another explosive breach. The heavy double doors of the anteroom blew inward with a deafening crack. Marco was thrown backward, landing hard against the floor, his shoulder bleeding profusely.
Victor Sinclair stepped through the haze of drywall dust, flanked by three heavily armed guards. At sixty, Victor looked like an aristocrat turned vulture, his silver hair immaculate, his eyes dead and cold. Behind him, Vanessa trailed in her stained red gown, her eyes wild with triumph.
“Game over, Dante,” Victor sneered, leveling a chrome-plated revolver. “Sign the release of the offshore holdings, or I bury you and your pathetic charity case together.”
Dante did not flinch. He slowly stepped in front of Isabella, shielding her completely. His assault rifle rested calmly in his hands, pointed dead at Victor’s heart.
“You’re too late, Victor,” Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
At that exact second, Dr. Evans cried out, “One more push, Isabella! She’s crowning! Push!”
Isabella screamed with every fiber of her soul, bearing down through the unbearable pain. A sharp, piercing wail cut through the smoke, silencing the entire room.
A baby’s cry.
Pure, loud, and defiant.
Dr. Evans quickly wrapped the newborn infant in a soft cashmere blanket and placed her onto Isabella’s chest. Isabella collapsed back against the pillows, sobbing uncontrollably as tiny, perfect fingers brushed against her bare skin.
“A girl,” Dr. Evans whispered, tears in his old eyes. “A healthy, beautiful baby girl.”
Vanessa sneered, pointing an accusing finger. “Kill them all, Father! Shoot them! We can forge the signatures!”
“Try it,” a thunderous voice echoed from the balcony behind Dante.
The glass french doors shattered inward as six elite tactical operators in unmarked black gear dropped from high-tension ropes, laser sights illuminating Victor Sinclair’s chest with a dozen overlapping red dots.
Elena, Dante’s chief legal operative and shadow commander, walked through the balcony opening, holding an encrypted tablet.
“Mr. Sinclair,” Elena announced over the hum of the idling helicopter outside. “Three minutes ago, Mrs. Isabella Moretti’s encrypted files were automatically uploaded to Interpol, the Department of Justice, and the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Your Swiss accounts are frozen. Your private jet has been grounded at O’Hare. And the Chicago Police Department tactical unit is currently entering your estate’s front gate.”
Victor’s face drained of all color. His gun hand trembled. “That’s impossible... who authorized that transfer? Only a bloodline heir can execute a master override!”
Isabella lifted her head from the pillows, cradling her newborn daughter against her heart. Her eyes were sharp as diamond glass.
“I authorized it,” Isabella said, her voice ringing clear and authoritative through the room. “Dante signed over fifty-one percent of Moretti Industries to me on our wedding day. I am the majority shareholder. I am the owner of this house. And you are trespassing on my property.”
Vanessa gasped, stumbling back into the wall. “Dante... you gave her... everything?”
“From the moment I met her,” Dante replied, his gaze never wavering from Victor. “Drop your weapons, Victor. Or my men will turn this room into your mausoleum.”

Downstairs, the wailing sirens of dozens of federal vehicles echoed through the shattered windows, drowning out the bitter cold wind of the Chicago winter.
