Chapter 6 - Shadows in the Ward

The private presidential wing at Northwestern Memorial Hospital was guarded by eight of Dante’s most trusted security operatives. Outside, reporters from every major news network shouted questions, their camera flashes illuminating the snowy Chicago streets below. The headline was dominating global media: SINCLAIR EMPIRE CRUMBLES OVERNIGHT: DANTE MORETTI’S WIFE EXPOSES MASSIVE FRAUD DURING DARING HEIST.
Inside the peaceful, sunlit recovery room, Isabella lay nestled beneath plush down blankets. Baby Victoria slept peacefully in a transparent bassinet beside her bed, tiny fists tucked beneath her chin.
The door clicked open softly. Rose Bennett, Isabella’s mother, walked in, leaning lightly on her cane. Her face was lined with age and the scars of past illness, but her eyes shone with fierce maternal love.
“Mom,” Isabella breathed, extending a hand.
Rose hurried forward, wrapping her daughter in a gentle, tearful embrace. “Oh, my sweet girl. When Marco called me... I nearly had a heart attack. Look at you. Look at my gorgeous granddaughter.”
Rose turned to the bassinet, her eyes welling with tears as she touched the baby’s soft cheek. “She has your father’s chin. And your stubborn strength.”
“I was so scared, Mom,” Isabella admitted, allowing herself to be vulnerable for the first time in hours. “For months, I thought Dante had stopped loving me. I thought I was losing my mind.”
“Men like Dante are built to fight wars, Bella,” Rose said gently, brushing hair from her daughter’s forehead. “Sometimes they forget that the greatest courage isn't defeating monsters—it’s letting the people they love stand beside them in the dark. But he’s learning. That boy hasn't slept in thirty-six hours. He’s been pacing outside the nursery door like a caged panther.”
Just then, Dante entered quietly, holding two paper coffee cups. He had changed into a clean charcoal sweater and dark trousers, but the exhaustion etched into his features was undeniable. He paused at the threshold, looking hesitant, as if unsure whether he had earned the right to step into the room.
Rose smiled warmly at him. “Come in, Dante. I was just heading down to the chapel to say a prayer of thanks. Take care of my girls.”
Rose kissed Isabella’s forehead and patted Dante’s arm gently as she walked out, pulling the door shut behind her.
Dante set the cups on the nightstand. He walked over to the bassinet, staring down at Victoria with reverent awe before moving to sit on the edge of Isabella’s bed.
“You shouldn't be awake,” he said softly, reaching out to gently clasp her fingers.
“I couldn't sleep,” Isabella replied, searching his dark eyes. “We need to talk, Dante. Really talk.”
Dante bowed his head, pressing his forehead against the back of her hand. His voice was heavy with remorse. “I failed you, Bella. I let my arrogance make me believe I could fight Victor alone while keeping you locked away in a gilded cage. I let Vanessa disrespect you under our own roof because I thought playing along with her father was the fastest way to bankrupt them without bloodshed. I broke your heart to protect your life, and that was the stupidest mistake of my existence.”
Isabella watched the proud, untouchable billionaire crumble before her. She tightened her grip on his fingers.
“You didn't fail me tonight, Dante,” she said softly. “You stood between me and a dozen guns. You trusted me with the ledger. But if we are going to raise Victoria... if this marriage is going to survive... there can never be another secret. No more shadow games. If you are going to war, you tell me. Because I am not a fragile flower you need to hide in a greenhouse. I am your wife.”
Dante looked up, his eyes bright with unshed tears. “You are the strongest person I have ever known. From this day forward, nothing is hidden. Every ledger, every decision, every heartbeat belongs to you.”
Suddenly, Isabella’s private tablet on the nightstand buzzed with an urgent notification. It was an encrypted video feed from the county jail where Vanessa Sinclair was being held pending federal arraignment.
