Chapter 8 - The Fall of Arthur Sterling

Sterling stepped back, bumping into the floral display behind him. ""I have no idea what you're talking about, Claire. You’re an unstable former employee. If you’ve suffered an assault, go to the police.""

""The police are already here, Arthur,"" Dante said, nodding toward the back of the room.

The large ballroom projector screens, which had been displaying Sterling’s campaign logo, suddenly flickered. A high-pitched tone sounded over the sound system as Owen’s bypass kicked in.

Instantly, the screens displayed high-resolution scans of the hospice ledgers. Columns of forged signatures, digitalis dosage logs, and bank account transfers to Meridian Health Holdings lit up the dark hall. Below them, a split-screen video feed showed Sterling’s chief of tactical security sitting in an interrogation chair, confessing directly to the camera.

""Dr. Sterling authorized the hit on nurse Claire Monroe. He told us to take her down after she accessed the private hospice partition. He also ordered the hit on Elena Monroe eleven years ago to cover up Mia Calder’s malpractice settlement.""

Murmurs exploded across the room. Donors began whispering in horror, backing away from Sterling as if he were carrying the plague. Several prominent city councilors quickly put down their drinks and moved toward the exits, desperate to distance themselves.

""Turn that off!"" Sterling shrieked, his pristine veneer shattering into raw, unhinged panic. ""It’s a fake! Calder fabricated it! He’s a criminal! A mobster!""

""You killed my mother,"" Claire said, taking another step toward him, her voice trembling not with fear, but with righteous fury. ""She dedicated thirty years to saving people in this city. She tried to save a little girl named Mia while you forged paperwork to protect your residency board. And when she threatened to expose you, you murdered her with the same poison you used on seventy-three helpless seniors.""

""She was a nobody!"" Sterling snarled, his sanity snapping under the suffocating weight of total exposure. ""Just a miserable nurse who didn't understand how institutions survive! Sometimes people have to be sacrificed for the greater good! You think you’re righteous, Claire? You’re standing next to Dante Calder! He kills people in the docks every week!""

""I don't pretend to be a saint, Arthur,"" Dante said calmly, stepping between Claire and the disgraced doctor. ""I’ve never hidden what I am. But I protect what is mine. And unlike you, I never murdered the weak to line my pockets.""

The grand hotel doors burst open again. This time, it wasn't street soldiers. A dozen agents in blue jackets bearing yellow FBI insignia flooded into the ballroom, led by a stern-faced federal prosecutor.

""Arthur Sterling,"" the lead agent barked, drawing handcuffs. ""By federal warrant, you are under arrest for racketeering, grand theft, conspiracy, and multiple counts of first-degree murder.""

Sterling collapsed onto his knees, sobbing hysterically as the cold steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists. The press flashbulbs erupted, capturing the golden boy of Harbor Point pinned against the floor.

Dante didn't stay to watch the spectacle. He gently placed his hand on the small of Claire’s back. ""Come,"" he said softly. ""Your work here is done.""
