Chapter 7 - The Lion's Den

The Grand Harbor Hotel was bathed in crystal chandeliers, golden drapery, and the superficial laughter of Harbor Point's high society. Politicians, corporate executives, and socialites clinked champagne flutes, celebrating Dr. Arthur Sterling’s upcoming coronation as the next District Attorney.
Sterling stood near the center stage, wearing a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo, his silver hair neatly styled, projecting the image of a selfless healer turned champion of justice.
""To the future of Harbor Point!"" a wealthy donor toasted. ""A city cleaned of street trash and criminal thugs like Dante Calder.""
Sterling smiled warmly, raising his glass. ""The era of lawlessness is coming to an end, my friends. Harbor Point will be restored to safety.""
Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the grand ballroom swung open with a resounding boom that echoed across the vaulted ceiling.
The ambient music died instantly. Conversations halted mid-sentence.
Walking through the entrance was Dante Calder. He wore a bespoke black three-piece suit, an aura of absolute dominance radiating from every step. Flanking him were four imposing men in dark overcoats, their hands resting noticeably near their lapels.
And walking arm-in-arm beside him was Claire Monroe.
She wore an elegant emerald green evening gown, her hair swept up to artfully conceal the stitches along her temple, though the faint shadow of a bruise on her cheekbone remained visible like a badge of honor. Around her wrist, catching the chandelier light, was the silver compass rose.
A collective gasp rippled through the ballroom. High-ranking city officials instinctively stepped back, clearing a wide path.
Sterling’s smile vanished. His face drained of color, turning the shade of ash. He stared at Claire as if looking at a ghost returned from the ocean floor. His hand trembled, splashing champagne onto his sleeve.
""Calder,"" Sterling sputtered, attempting to maintain his polished composure as Dante and Claire stopped just ten feet from him. ""You’re trespassing on a private event. Security! Escort these people out immediately.""
Nobody moved. Sterling glanced wildly around the room. The hotel security guards, men who recognized Dante Calder’s face from the dockyard payrolls, kept their heads down and stood frozen against the walls.
""Your security is indisposed, Arthur,"" Dante said, his voice quiet yet carrying through the dead silent hall like thunder. ""In fact, twelve of them are currently in police holding cells, giving very detailed statements to federal marshals outside your jurisdiction.""

Claire stepped forward, her heels clicking crisply against the polished parquet floor. She locked eyes with Sterling, her gaze cold, unshakable, and searing.
""You look surprised to see me, Dr. Sterling,"" Claire said, loud enough for every donor and journalist in the room to hear. ""Did your men forget to tell you that ditch on Route 9 wasn't deep enough?""
