Chapter 3 - The Secret in the Stitch

Consciousness returned to Claire in waves of sharp sensation: the clean smell of antiseptic, the rhythmic beeping of a cardiac monitor, and the strange, warm texture of silk against her bandaged arm. She gasped, her hands instinctively grabbing the edge of the mattress as she jerked upright.

""Careful,"" a low voice murmured from the corner of the room.

Claire turned her head, pain spiking down her neck. Sitting in a leather armchair beside her bed was Dante Calder, dressed in a fresh dark suit, nursing a glass of bourbon. The storm outside lashed against thick reinforced glass windows high up on the stone wall.

""Where... am I?"" she croaked, noticing the IV line taped expertly to the back of her right hand.

""My home. You’ve been sedated for fourteen hours,"" Dante said, setting his glass on an end table. He stood and walked toward the bedside, his tall frame casting a long, protective shadow over her. ""You have two cracked ribs, a minor concussion, four stitches over your eyebrow, and severe contusions. But you’re alive.""

Claire took a ragged breath, her fingers trembling as she touched her temple. ""Why did you help me? You’re Dante Calder. People in the city say you destroy people.""

""People say a great many things,"" Dante replied without emotion. ""Most of them are true. But you don't belong in a ditch, Claire. And your mother didn't deserve to die penniless after what this city did to her.""

Claire's eyes widened with profound shock. ""How do you know about my mother?""

""She tried to save my sister eleven years ago. A girl named Mia."" Dante reached out, lightly touching the silver compass around her wrist. ""Your mother wore this exact design. She gave my sister comfort when no one else would.""

Claire stared at him, memories clicking into place like tumblers in a lock. ""My mother... she always kept an old, faded hospital badge in her drawer until the day she died of cancer last winter. She told me the system murdered a sixteen-year-old girl named Mia because of greed, and that she was powerless to stop it. She made me swear to protect people no matter what it cost.""

""And you tried,"" Dante said quietly. ""By going after Arthur Sterling.""

Claire’s eyes flashed with fierce panic. ""Sterling knows! He sent his private security team. They took everything—my laptop, my flash drives, the ledger!""

""They took what was in your bag,"" Dante noted, observing the strange determination in her jaw. ""Yet when I picked you up on that road, you muttered that they missed one thing. What did they miss, Claire?""

Claire swallowed hard, looking toward the heavy steel door. ""Lock the door.""

Dante raised an eyebrow, stepping to the door and turning the biometric deadbolt. ""Done.""

Claire reached with trembling fingers toward the hem of her thick wool hospital sock on her uninjured right leg. Stitched deep inside the elastic band was a tiny, rectangular microfiber pouch. With a sharp tug, she snapped the thread and slid out an ultra-slim micro-SD card no bigger than a fingernail.

""I’m an emergency room nurse,"" Claire said, a fierce, defiant spark returning to her voice. ""We prepare for worst-case scenarios. I knew if I got caught, they’d search my bag and my car. I backed up the raw encrypted server files before I left the archives.""

Dante looked at the tiny black card in her palm, then looked into her defiant eyes. A slow, rare smirk pulled at the corner of his lips.

""You didn't just survive an ambush, Claire Monroe,"" Dante murmured, stepping closer. ""You brought me the execution order for the biggest hypocrite in Harbor Point.""
