Chapter 4 - Shadows at the Gate

By midnight, Owen had plugged the micro-SD card into an air-gapped terminal inside Dante's command room. Claire sat wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket in a rolling chair, deciphering medical jargon that translated into an astonishing conspiracy.
""Here,"" Claire pointed, her voice steady despite her fatigue. ""Look at the batch numbers for the cardiac medication. Sterling’s private hospice facility was ordering lethal doses of digitalis. Then, within forty-eight hours, the patients would suffer fatal arrhythmias. But look at the legal paperwork attached to each patient file.""
Owen leaned in, his fingers flying across the keys. ""All estate executors were reassigned to an offshore shell company called Meridian Health Holdings.""
""Owned entirely by Arthur Sterling and two sitting appellate judges,"" Dante stated, leaning over the back of Claire's chair. The proximity sent a sudden wave of heat through her, contrasting sharply with the cold numbers on the screen. ""They liquidated the real estate of seventy-three wealthy elderly patients without heirs over the past five years. Tens of millions funnelled straight into his campaign war chest.""
Suddenly, a harsh red warning light began flashing along the console. A muted chime echoed through the fortress.
""Perimeter breach at the lower gate,"" Owen announced, switching the monitors to the thermal security feeds.
On the screen, three black unmarked tactical vans were parked near the edge of the estate’s outer treeline. Men in black ballistic gear and suppressed rifles were fanning out, cutting through the heavy security fencing with hydraulic shears.
""They traced the ambulance frequency Mercer used,"" Owen cursed, reaching under his arm for his sidearm. ""It's Sterling's private black-ops squad. Ex-special forces contractors. Boss, they have at least twenty men.""
Claire’s breath hitched in her throat. She tried to stand, but the pain in her ribs doubled her over. ""They’re here for me. Oh God, Dante... they’re going to kill everyone.""
Dante didn't flinch. He didn't blink. He calmly reached into a mahogany desk drawer, pulled out a matte-black automatic weapon, and checked the chamber with a smooth, metallic click.
""They aren't here for an arrest, Claire,"" Dante said coldly. ""They’re here to clean a crime scene. But they seem to have forgotten whose property they just walked onto.""
Dante turned to Owen. ""Shut down the estate lights. Activate the low-frequency jammer. Nobody calls for backup, nobody leaves.""
""Understood,"" Owen replied, hitting an emergency switch.
The entire mansion plunged into total darkness, save for the pale ambient glow of the ocean outside the high windows. Claire caught Dante’s arm in the pitch black. Her fingers dug into his forearm.
""Dante, please... don't die for this,"" she pleaded, her heart racing not just from fear, but from the sudden, terrifying realization that she couldn't bear to see him fall.
Dante looked down at her small hand gripping his coat. In the dark, his eyes were like liquid silver. He reached down, gently covering her fingers with his warm, calloused palm.

""I’ve run this city from the dark for a decade, Claire,"" he whispered, his thumb brushing over her skin. ""They think they brought a war to my door. They only walked into my cage. Stay in the vault room. Lock it from the inside.""
He pushed her gently toward the heavy steel panic room concealed behind the bookshelf, watching until she was safely sealed behind six inches of reinforced titanium. Then, Dante Calder turned into the dark hallway, a predator finally released on his home ground.
