Chapter 5 - Blood on the Marble

The silence inside Calder Manor was heavier than the sea fog. The tactical team entered through the rear terrace doors, shattered glass muffling under their combat boots. They moved in tactical wedges, infrared lasers cutting green lines through the opulent darkness of the grand gallery.
""Target is likely in the medical suite,"" the squad leader whispered into his comms. ""Sterling wants the nurse dead and Calder neutralized. Frame it as a gang dispute over port territory. Shoot on sight.""
A shadow dropped from the mezzanine.
A sharp, sickening crack echoed through the marble hallway before the rear operative could even raise his weapon. Dante drove the man’s head into the base of a stone pillar, disarming him in a single fluid motion. Before the remaining men could pivot, Dante fired three suppressed rounds, dropping two more contractors into the expensive Persian rugs.
""Ambush!"" the squad leader screamed, opening fire on full automatic.
Muzzle flashes illuminated the grand foyer in violent strobe bursts, chipping plaster and shattering priceless antique mirrors. Dante rolled behind a solid oak archway, his movements frighteningly precise, calculated, and devoid of fear. This was not a panicked defense; it was an execution.
From the service stairs, Owen and four of Dante's elite security team opened a devastating crossfire. The tactical superiority Sterling’s mercenaries thought they possessed dissolved in under two minutes. Dante advanced through the smoke like an apparition, eliminating threats with cold, ruthless efficiency.
In the reinforced vault, Claire sat on the floor, listening to the muffled thuds, gunfire, and shouts echoing through the vents. Her heart pounded in her ears like a war drum. She had spent her entire medical career saving lives, treating wounds, fighting to keep the thinnest thread of life intact. Now, outside that steel door, men were dying because of the truth she had uncovered.
Yet, as she held her breath in the darkness, she knew Dante Calder wasn't a monster. The city called him ruthless, a criminal kingpin who bowed to no law. But when she was bleeding out in the freezing ditch, ignored by eight ordinary citizens who claimed to be civilized, the only person who stopped to pull her from the grave was the devil himself.
A final gunshot rang out, followed by heavy, ringing silence.
Minutes crawled past. Claire could hear nothing except her own shallow breathing. Her hands shook as she waited, praying against hope.
Then came the mechanical hiss of the vault lock.
The titanium door swung open.
Dante stood in the doorway. His suit jacket was gone, the sleeves of his white dress shirt rolled up to his forearms, smudged with soot and a streak of blood across his collarbone. He looked breathing slightly hard, his dark hair messy, his weapon lowered.
Claire stood up slowly, clutching her ribs, her breath catching in her throat. ""Dante?""
He looked at her, searching her face, before dropping his gun onto a side table. He stepped forward into the vault, closing the distance between them in two long strides. Without a word, he pulled her into his arms, carefully avoiding her injured left side, holding her close against his chest.
Claire buried her face into the curve of his neck, breathing in the scent of rain, gunpowder, and the steady, grounding warmth of his skin. She didn't pull away.
""It's over,"" Dante murmured against her hair. ""They're gone.""
May you like
""Are you hurt?"" she asked, pulling back slightly to inspect the blood on his shirt with her trained nurse's hands.
""None of it is mine,"" Dante replied softly, his fingers lingering at the nape of her neck. ""The leader was Sterling’s head of security. He’s alive in the cellar. And he’s ready to talk.""
