Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

Dawn broke over Harbor Point in pale gray hues, burning off the thick sea fog that clung to the cliffs. In the private library, Claire sat across from Dante, sipping black coffee. Her color had returned, though the bruises on her cheek and eye were turning a deep shade of plum.
Owen walked into the room, holding a folder of signed confessions and a digital recording. ""Sterling’s man broke within ten minutes. He confirmed the whole operation. Sterling personally authorized the hit on Claire and the disposal of the body. He also admitted that Sterling ordered the murder of Elena Monroe when she threatened to go to the press eleven years ago.""
Claire’s cup clattered against the saucer. Hot coffee sloshed over the rim. She stared at Owen, her eyes wide with sudden, agonizing comprehension.
""My mother... didn't die of natural cancer?"" Claire whispered, her voice cracking into a jagged sob.
Dante knelt before her chair, taking her cold hands into his own. ""Your mother died of rapid-onset organ failure, Claire. The exact same symptoms you flagged in those seventy-three patient charts. Sterling poisoned her eleven years ago to bury Mia's death and silence the clinic.""
A heavy, suffocating sob tore from Claire’s chest. The grief she had buried beneath months of rigorous hospital shifts broke through all at once. She crumpled forward, weeping for her mother, for the innocent patients, for the young girl Mia who had died alone on a cold stretcher.
Dante held her firmly, letting her grief run its course against his shoulder. His expression was harder than stone, but his touch was surprisingly gentle. ""Listen to me, Claire,"" he whispered into her ear, his voice burning with dark promise. ""Your mother spent her life fighting for justice within a system that betrayed her. You almost died doing the same thing. But you are not alone anymore. Today, Sterling pays the debt for both of our families.""
Claire lifted her tear-streaked face, looking into Dante's dark, unwavering eyes. ""The legal system won't touch him, Dante. He owns the police chief. The district attorney's office is already preparing his victory party tonight at the Grand Harbor Hotel.""
""Then we don't use the legal system,"" Dante said, rising to his full height. ""We use mine.""
He turned to Owen. ""Broadcast the encrypted files to every major media outlet in the state, but put a fifteen-minute delayed lock on it. Set the unlock timer for eight o'clock tonight. Right when Sterling takes the podium for his campaign gala.""
""And what about us, boss?"" Owen asked, a dangerous grin forming on his face.
""Get the fleet ready,"" Dante said. ""Tonight, we attend a party.""
Claire stood up, bracing against the arm of the chair. ""I’m coming with you.""
Dante turned, frowning. ""You can barely walk, Claire. You have two broken ribs.""
""I am the lead witness, Dante,"" she insisted, stepping toward him with her head held high, ignoring the sharp twinge in her side. ""Arthur Sterling killed your sister. But he also killed my mother, and he tried to feed me to the worms on Route 9. I am not hiding in a safe room while you finish this. I want him to look me in the eye when his world burns.""

Dante stared at her for a long, quiet moment. He saw no fear in her eyes—only the unbreakable, stubborn courage of a woman who had pulled herself off the wet pavement when everyone else drove by.
A faint smile touched his lips. ""Get her a dress,"" Dante ordered Owen. ""Something that hides a Kevlar vest.""
