Chapter 9 - Healing Under The Clouds

Three months passed.

The cold winter rains gave way to the soft, blooming warmth of early Pacific spring. Liam Vance had been sentenced to thirty-five years at a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole, his assets seized, his name erased from high society, and his cartel associates locked away in international operations.

Wren’s life had transformed beyond her wildest dreams.

Under the expert care of Dr. Bennett, her fractured ribs had healed completely, leaving no lingering pain. The faint scar on her brow had faded into an almost invisible silver line, a tiny badge of survival that she wore without shame. She had taken command of the Pacific Maritime Regulatory Commission, operating from a breathtaking corner office on the fortieth floor of the Calloway Tower. With her sharp mind and ruthless precision, she had cleaned up the port’s freight manifests, cutting illegal trafficking by eighty percent and earning the highest civilian commendations from both municipal and federal trade boards.

Yet, despite her busy days, every evening ended in the penthouse of the Harborview Citadel.

Wren sat on the wide outdoor terrace, wrapped in an oversized cream knit sweater, sipping a warm cup of Earl Grey tea as she watched the sun dip below the Pacific horizon, painting the sky in ribbons of gold, violet, and rose. Behind her, the glass sliding doors opened, and Julian stepped out onto the deck. He had abandoned his formal suits for a simple charcoal cashmere sweater and dark slacks, his face relaxed in a way that the outside world never got to see.

He walked over, resting his hands on the back of her teak chair, leaning down to press a soft kiss to her temple. ""You worked fourteen hours today, Madam Director. Are you trying to put my shipping lines out of business?""

Wren laughed, a bright, musical sound that filled the evening air. She reached up, twining her fingers with his scarred hand. ""If your shipping lines have discrepancies, Julian, I will audit you without hesitation. You knew who I was when you hired me.""

""I did,"" Julian smiled, moving around the chair to stand beside her, gazing out over the glittering city lights. ""A woman who could bring down an empire with a red pen and a calculator.""

Wren looked at him, feeling an overwhelming wave of warmth in her chest. For three years, she had lived in terror of the shadows, believing that safety was found in smallness, in hiding, in shrinking herself so nobody would notice her. But Julian had taught her that the only true safety lay in standing tall, embracing her strength, and trusting the hands that chose to hold her instead of break her.

""What are you thinking about?"" Julian asked softly, noticing the quiet depth in her eyes.

May you like

""I was thinking about that payphone at the hospital,"" Wren murmured, smiling faintly. ""I stood there in the mud, with two broken ribs and fifty cents in my pocket, convinced that the whole world had ended.""

Julian reached into his pocket. ""It did end, Wren. The old life ended. So that this one could begin.""
