Chapter 6 - Crushed Ambitions

Liam swallowed hard, trying frantically to salvage whatever shred of dignity remained. Beads of cold sweat erupted along his hairline, ruining his manicured composure. He forced a sickeningly hollow smile, glancing around at the dozens of VIPs and reporters staring at them.
""Julian... Mr. Calloway,"" Liam stammered, extending a trembling hand that Julian completely ignored. ""I didn't realize you were attending the merger announcement. And... Wren. Darling. You look... radiant. I was worried sick about you. You disappeared from the apartment so late last night, I thought—""
Wren took one slow, deliberate step forward. The carbon-fiber brace held her frame perfectly rigid, hiding the agony of her bruised ribs beneath an aura of absolute royalty. She looked down at him with such cold, aristocratic disgust that Liam shrank back another half-step.
""Do not speak my name, Liam,"" Wren said, her voice clear, bell-like, and carrying across the entire ballroom. ""And do not speak of last night. Because last night, you made the fatal mistake of underestimating who owns the ledger.""
At that moment, the massive electronic screens on the ballroom stage—which had been displaying promotional graphics for Liam’s new venture merger—flickered violently. A sharp static pop echoed through the state-of-the-art sound system.
The promotional logos vanished, replaced by high-resolution digital documents: internal server logs, encrypted chat histories, foreign bank routing numbers, and security camera footage. The top of the screens displayed high-definition video from the alley behind Liam’s Yaletown condo at 11:14 PM: Liam Vance savagely striking Wren with a brass paperweight, tearing her ring from her hand, and dragging her unconscious body out into the storm.
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the crowd. Flashbulbs went off like lightning as every journalist in the room began snapping photos of the smoking-gun evidence broadcast before hundreds of witnesses.
""My God,"" whispered the chairman of the Maritime Trust, stepping back in revulsion. ""He's an animal.""
""That's forged! It's a deepfake! It's a lie!"" Liam screamed hysterically, turning wildly to the crowd, his manicured facade crumbling into pathetic madness. ""She framed me! She's an embezzler! Look at her, she's working with Calloway! She's trying to sabotage the merger!""
Julian took half a step forward, and Liam’s voice died instantly in his throat. Julian didn't shout. He didn't raise a finger. He simply looked down at Liam with the terrifying calm of an executioner adjusting the noose.
""Those manifests bear the encrypted digital seal of the North American Maritime Division,"" Julian spoke softly, each word landing like an anvil. ""And ten minutes ago, my logistics team intercepted the three container vessels in the international waters off Point Roberts. The cargo was not shipping components, Mr. Vance. It was sixty million dollars of Grade-A contraband belonging to the Reyes Cartel, registered to your personal private bank account in Zurich.""

Liam’s knees literally gave out. He grabbed the edge of a high banquet table to keep from collapsing, knocking over a tower of champagne glasses that smashed loudly across the carpet.
""The Reyes family doesn't like losing sixty million dollars,"" Julian whispered, leaning down so only Liam could hear his final, chilling verdict. ""And they certainly don't like when a cowardly errand boy hands their empire to me on a silver platter.""
