Chapter 8 - The Shadow's Oath

The gala dissolved into chaos as executives scrambled to distance themselves from Liam’s toxic collapse. Julian calmly placed his hand on the small of Wren’s back, guiding her out of the ballroom through a private VIP corridor away from the clamoring press corps.
They stepped into the private elevator that soared to the penthouse suite of the hotel, where Julian’s private helicopter waited on the rooftop pad. As the brass elevator doors slid shut, the adrenaline that had sustained Wren through the confrontation finally broke.
Her breath hitched, her knees trembled, and she leaned heavily against the mirrored wall of the cabin, clutching her side as the pain from her fractured ribs flared violently.
In a heartbeat, Julian caught her, pulling her gently against his chest so she didn't have to support her own weight. ""Easy,"" he murmured, his voice remarkably gentle compared to the cold monster who had just destroyed a man in front of hundreds. ""It’s over. You don't have to fight anymore.""
Wren buried her face into his lapel, breathing in the scent of his cologne, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat under her palm. The terror, the humiliation of being beaten in the alley, the fear of prison—all of it washed out of her in a wave of quiet tears. Julian didn't pull away. He simply wrapped his strong arms around her, holding her securely as the elevator ascended to the clouds.
""I took your advice,"" she whispered through her tears. ""I bent. But I didn't break.""
""You conquered them,"" Julian corrected softly, his lips brushing the crown of her hair. ""You walked into a room full of monsters and made them bow to you.""
When the elevator reached the top, Marcus was waiting with a warm cashmere blanket, which Julian wrapped around her shoulders. But instead of boarding the helicopter back to his fortress, Julian led her out to the private glass-walled observation terrace overlooking the entire twinkling expanse of Vancouver, from the dark waters of English Bay to the glowing peaks of the North Shore mountains.
Julian stood beside her, leaning his hands on the brass railing. ""The port authority has already reached out to my office. With Liam in custody and the Reyes network severed, the entire maritime logistics oversight for the Pacific Coast needs a chief independent auditor. Someone with absolute integrity, an eye for invisible discrepancies, and the courage to look death in the eye without blinking.""

Wren turned to look at him, her heart skipping a beat. ""You're offering me the position.""
""I am offering you complete sovereignty,"" Julian said, turning to face her, his gray eyes burning with an emotion he had kept locked away for three long years. ""You spent your life running from power because you thought power only destroyed. But power can also protect. Stay with me, Wren. Not as my bookkeeper. Not as my shadow. As my equal.""
