Chapter 5 - The Gala of Wolves

The Grand Pacific Ballroom at the Fairmont Hotel was bathed in golden chandelier light, filled with Vancouver’s high society, city council members, international shipping executives, and media cameras. Waiters in white gloves floated between clusters of wealthy socialites carrying silver trays of vintage Dom Pérignon.
Near the center stage, Liam Vance stood holding court, wearing a bespoke Brioni suit, grinning with the effortless arrogance of a man who believed the world was his personal playground. He adjusted his silk cuffs and laughed heartily with the chairman of the Maritime Trust, confident that his nightmare was over. He had checked his phone an hour ago; his private investigator reported that Wren Sterling had not returned to her apartment, her phone was off the network, and harbor police were already preparing fraud warrants based on his anonymous morning tip.
""To the future of West Coast logistics,"" Liam toasted, raising his champagne flute to the cameras. ""Integrity, transparency, and innovation.""
Before the chairman could clink his glass, the heavy double doors at the entrance of the ballroom swung open with a resounding thud.
The security guards stationed at the velvet ropes didn't even attempt to intervene. They stepped back immediately, bowing their heads in deep deference as Marcus and six imposing syndicate bodyguards cleared a wide path through the crowd. The ambient chatter of two hundred elites died down into absolute, breathless silence.
Through the threshold walked Julian Calloway.
A collective shiver ran through the room. Julian rarely appeared at public social gatherings, and whenever he did, fortunes shifted and corporate dynasties collapsed. But it was not Julian alone that caused the champagne glasses to freeze mid-air.
Gliding at his side, her arm resting gracefully in the crook of his elbow, was Wren Sterling.
She walked with supreme, effortless majesty. Her chin was held high, her emerald gown catching the chandelier light like liquid jade, and the Burmese ruby at her throat burning with crimson fire. There was not a trace of the woman Liam had beaten in the mud twelve hours earlier. Her gaze was cool, imperious, and filled with lethal confidence.
Across the room, Liam’s face went chalk-white. His champagne flute slipped from his fingers, shattering violently against the parquet floor, spraying alcohol and shards across his polished Italian shoes. His eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated horror as he stared at Wren.
""Impossible..."" Liam stammered, his voice choked with dread. ""That's... that's impossible!""
Wren didn't break her stride. Guided by Julian, she moved through the parting sea of billionaires and politicians, her eyes locked onto Liam’s trembling frame. The guests whispered frantically, recognizing her as the brilliant accountant who had suddenly disappeared from Liam’s side, now returning adorned in the legendary Calloway family jewels.
Julian halted three feet from Liam. The kingpin’s presence was so suffocating that the executives surrounding Liam instinctively backed away, isolating the young financier like a lone deer encircled by a pride of lions.

Julian looked down at the broken glass at Liam’s feet, then slowly brought his icy gray gaze up to the man's terrified eyes.
""You dropped your glass, Mr. Vance,"" Julian said softly, his voice carrying clearly into the breathless quiet of the grand hall. ""Or did the ghost you buried last night startle you?""
