Chapter 2 - The Lion's Den

The heavy leather interior of the central Escalade smelled of rain, cedar, and expensive Cuban tobacco. The partition was raised, sealing the rear passenger cabin in complete, suffocating quiet. Julian Calloway sat in the far corner, completely motionless. Even in the dim ambient glow of the city streetlights streaking across the tinted windows, his presence dominated the entire vehicle. He wore a midnight-blue bespoke three-piece suit without a tie, his crisp collar open at the throat. His dark hair was brushed back, his jaw cut like sharp slate, and his cool gray eyes—eyes that had sentenced countless men to the bottom of the Pacific—slowly tracked down Wren’s shivering frame.

Wren pulled the wool coat tighter around herself, curling against the leather seat. When his gaze reached her split lower lip, the purple hematoma swelling over her cheekbone, and the way she protected her cracked ribs with her arm, Julian’s expression didn't shift into anger. It shifted into something far worse: complete, absolute absence of mercy.

""Look at me, Wren,"" he ordered softly.

She forced her chin up, meeting his terrifying gaze. ""I'm looking.""

""He put hands on you,"" Julian stated, not as a question, but as a recorded fact that had already determined someone's execution date.

""He needed a scapegoat,"" Wren whispered, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to stay composed. ""The Port Authority opened an inquiry into three container shipments arriving from Vladivostok tomorrow morning. Liam forged my digital seal on the clearance documents. If those containers clear the harbor under my name, federal agents will raid my apartment by noon. He knew I’d go to prison for twenty-five years while he wired the kickback money to the Cayman Islands. When I found the files on his laptop tonight, he tried to kill me.""

Julian leaned forward slowly, resting his forearms on his knees. The faint scent of his cologne washed over her, grounding her racing thoughts. ""Liam Vance is a middleman for the Reyes syndicate. Small-time vermin who think having a penthouse makes them royalty. He believed you had no family, no backing, and no one to pull you out of the gutter when he discarded you."" Julian reached out, his long, scarred fingers lifting her chin with surprising gentleness, tilting her face toward the dim overhead light. His thumb brushed just beneath the split skin of her lip, light as a ghost. ""He forgot whose shadow you used to stand in.""

The car turned smoothly into the private underground entrance of the Harborview Citadel—Julian’s fortified private high-rise penthouse overlooking Coal Harbour. The elevator opened directly into a vast, minimalist penthouse floored in dark Italian marble, with floor-to-ceiling windows showing the black waters of Burrard Inlet whipped by the howling storm.

Waiting in the foyer was an elderly man in a sharp tweed suit with an antique medical bag, accompanied by two armed nurses in black scrubs.

""Dr. Bennett,"" Julian said without looking away from Wren. ""Take her to the guest wing. Full trauma assessment. X-ray her chest, set the ribs, dress the lacerations. If she experiences even a moment of unnecessary pain, I will consider it personal negligence.""

""Right away, Julian,"" the doctor replied calmly, clearly accustomed to the kingpin's absolute authority.

Wren tried to stand on her own, but a sudden sharp flare in her ribs caused her knees to buckle. Before she could hit the marble, Julian caught her effortlessly, scooping her up against his chest. She instinctively buried her face into the curve of his neck, her cold tears soaking into the fabric of his vest. He didn't say a word, carrying her down the wide corridor as if she weighed nothing at all. As he set her gently onto the medical suite's examination bed, Wren grabbed his cuff.

""Julian,"" she whispered, her eyes wide with fear. ""Liam told me that if I went to anyone, his cartel partners would hunt me down. He said nobody in this city could protect me.""

Julian smoothed a stray strand of damp blonde hair from her forehead, his eyes dark as midnight water. ""Liam Vance is about to learn the difference between a criminal and an emperor, little bird. Rest now. Tomorrow morning, we collect his debts.""
