Chapter 4 - The Royal Transformation

By eight in the morning, the rain outside had stopped, replaced by a low, silver mist rolling off the Pacific ocean. The master bedroom suite of Julian’s penthouse was transformed into an atelier of high fashion and quiet power. Julian had summoned an entire team of top European stylists, hair designers, and makeup artists—all bound by syndicate non-disclosure contracts backed by lethal consequence.

A master cosmetician worked miracles on Wren’s battered face. Using medical-grade silicone primers, color-correcting pigments, and delicate foundation, she completely erased the dark purple bruises from her cheekbone and temple. The split lip was concealed beneath a coat of deep, velvety crimson lipstick that made Wren’s pale blue eyes look fierce, cold, and predatory. Her golden-blonde hair was swept up into an intricate, elegant chignon held by diamond-encrusted platinum pins, leaving her long, slender neck exposed.

Under Julian’s strict direction, the stylists fitted her into a custom emerald-green silk crepe gown designed by an Italian couture house. The dress was a masterpiece of architectural tailoring: high-collared and long-sleeved to conceal the butterfly stitches on her brow and any traces of bruising on her arms, but clinging smoothly to her curves before falling into an authoritative, floor-sweeping train. Beneath the heavy silk, Dr. Bennett had swapped her bulky medical brace for a razor-thin, custom carbon-fiber corset that supported her fractured ribs, allowing her to stand completely upright without flinching.

When Wren turned to face the full-length gilded mirror, she gasped. The frightened, bruised girl who had scrambled through the Yaletown mud twelve hours ago had vanished. In her place stood a striking, aristocratic woman who looked like an untouchable queen out of a dark romance novel.

The double doors opened, and Julian walked into the room. He wore a razor-sharp charcoal tuxedo with satin lapels, looking every bit the ruthless billionaire sovereign he was. As his eyes fell on Wren, he paused. A rare, genuine flicker of predatory admiration lit up his dark gaze.

He crossed the room slowly, his polished dress shoes clicking against the marble floor. From an inner jacket pocket, he produced a velvet box. He flipped it open to reveal a magnificent necklace: an oval-cut fifty-carat Burmese pigeon-blood ruby surrounded by two tiers of colorless marquise diamonds.

""This belonged to my grandmother,"" Julian murmured, stepping behind her. His fingers were cool and steady as he placed the heavy necklace around her throat, fastening the intricate platinum clasp. The blood-red gem rested perfectly above the silk neckline of her gown, glowing against her pale skin like a brand of imperial protection.

Wren looked at him in the mirror. He stood directly behind her, his hands resting lightly on the curve of her waist, careful of her ribs. ""Why are you doing all this for me, Julian? After three years of silence?""

Julian met her gaze in the glass. ""Because three years ago, when you found my ledgers, you didn't run to the police, and you didn't ask for a bribe. You told me straight to my face that my supply chain logistics had a three-percent error margin and walked out the door. You are the only person in this city who was never afraid of me, Wren. And I do not permit anyone else to harm what belongs under my wing.""

He offered his arm. ""The ballroom awaits. Let us show Mr. Vance what his greed has purchased.""
