Chapter 9 - The Viral Reckoning

By the following morning, Jonah woke up to find his phone practically vibrating off his nightstand.
He picked it up and stared in shock.
Despite Principal Vance's weak attempts to stop students from recording, dozens of videos from the assembly had hit social media overnight. Clips titled ""Arrogant Navy Recruiter Tries To Humiliate Teen, Regrets It Instantly"" and ""Female Navy SEAL Commander Shuts Down Sexist Officer"" had exploded across TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook.
By noon, the main video had amassed over fifteen million views.
Comment sections were flooded with military veterans, active-duty service members, and civilians demanding justice for Jonah and praising Vivian’s absolute dominance. National news outlets had picked up the story, blurring out the classified tablet screen but broadcasting Malden’s pathetic collapse on every major morning show.
When Jonah arrived at school that Monday morning, the atmosphere had completely transformed.
The moment he walked through the front doors, the crowded hallway went quiet for a split second before erupting into cheers. Students parted like the Red Sea, patting him on the shoulder, giving him fist bumps, and asking him if he was okay.
Marcus, the loudmouthed sophomore from the second row who had laughed the loudest during the assembly, intercepted Jonah near his locker. Marcus's face was beet red, his hands nervously shoved into his jacket pockets.
""Hey, Bennett,"" Marcus stammered, looking down at the floor. ""Look, man... about Friday. I was being an idiot. I just laughed because Malden was an adult in uniform and I thought it was funny, but... it was messed up. Your mom is the coolest person on the planet. I’m really sorry.""
Jonah looked at Marcus for a moment. He saw the genuine remorse in the boy’s eyes, the realization of how cowardly peer pressure could be.

""Thanks, Marcus,"" Jonah said calmly, shutting his locker door. ""Just remember that before you jump on the next person who doesn't fit into your box.""
Marcus nodded vigorously and backed away, visibly relieved that Jonah hadn't held a grudge. For the first time in his high school career, Jonah didn't feel like an outsider carrying an invisible burden. The truth was out, the bullies had been silenced, and his mother’s legacy was finally understood.
