Chapter 4 - Breaking Point

Malden moved with furious, explosive energy. He dropped into a dead hang on the heavy metal crossbeam and began pumping out pull-ups with aggressive, jerky motions. His face turned crimson by rep twelve, his veins bulging against his pale throat. He dropped to the floor on rep twenty, panting heavily, sprinted across the baseline, hoisted two eighty-pound tactical sandbags, and lumbered down the court.
His form broke down on the return sprint. His boots squeaked frantically against the wax, his shoulders slumped, and when he threw the sandbags down, he almost tripped over his own feet before lunging at the heavy striking dummy to finish his circuit. He collapsed against the padded mats, checking his stopwatch, gasping for air.
""Two minutes... forty-eight seconds,"" Malden wheezed, looking up at the crowd with a desperate, triumphant smirk. ""Beat that, 'Commander'.""
The gym was silent. Every eye turned to Vivian.
Vivian didn't sprint. She didn't take off her field jacket. She didn't even stretch.
She walked over to the pull-up bar, leaped up, and caught the bar with a dead, hollow thud. What followed wasn't just a physical test; it was a masterclass in biomechanical efficiency. She pulled her chin over the bar with absolute stillness—no swinging, no kipping, no wasted breath. One. Two. Ten. Twenty. Thirty. Her body moved like a steel piston.
She dropped softly to the hardwood, barely making a sound, accelerated across the floor with the blinding speed of a sprinting predator, scooped the two eighty-pound sandbags into her arms effortlessly, and carried them down the court as if they were bags of groceries.
When she dropped the bags at center court, she didn't collapse. She stepped up to the combat training dummy. What followed was a blur of calculated violence—three devastating strikes that echoed through the gym rafters like rifle shots, folding the heavy reinforced dummy instantly.
""One minute, twelve seconds,"" Chief Griggs announced, his voice trembling into the silence.
The bleachers erupted into absolute pandemonium.
Jonah stood up, his heart pounding in his chest, watching his classmates scream and cheer. The kids who had mocked him minutes earlier were now staring at his mother like she was an avenging superhero.

Malden was still on his knees, gasping for breath, clutching his cramping ribs. His face was pale, his arrogant veneer stripped away completely. But instead of honoring his word, panic turned to blind, venomous rage.
""It doesn't matter!"" Malden yelled, grabbing the floor mic and pulling himself up. ""It doesn't prove anything! You're an imposter! No woman has ever been awarded the Special Warfare insignia! You're committing stolen valor, and I will personally see you court-martialed for this circus!""
