Chapter 2 - The Shadows At The Door

The gym fell into an uneasy, suffocating hush.
Lieutenant Malden was still soaking in his perceived dominance, oblivious to the shift in atmospheric pressure. He casually tapped his microphone against his palm, expecting Vivian to look at the multi-station pull-up rig, the weighted obstacle dummy, and the military-grade training gear and admit defeat.
Instead, the gym's rear crash doors didn't just open—they slammed against the brick stoppers with the force of an explosion.
Six massive men moved into the gymnasium in a textbook diamond formation. They wore sterile black combat utilities, devoid of nametags or unit patches, but their posture was unmistakable. Every single one moved with the coiled, predatory grace of men who lived on the dark side of the globe, surviving things civilized people only read about in redacted history books.
The entire gymnasium recoiled. Students who had been chuckling half a second ago shrank back against the bleachers. The loudmouth sophomore in the second row choked on his own breath, sliding down in his seat until his knees touched his chin.
Chief Griggs, who had remained silent at the recruiting booth, suddenly stood at rigid, trembling attention, his heels clicking together so hard the sound echoed off the basketball backboard. His hand snapped into a salute before he even consciously realized he was doing it.
Malden frowned, annoyed by the sudden distraction. ""Excuse me! This is an active recruiting assembly. You can't just barge in here without clearing it with the naval district coordinator. Who the hell are you men?""
None of the operators looked at Malden. They didn't even acknowledge his existence. Their cold, scanning eyes swept the rafters, the exits, the corners of the bleachers, and then locked squarely on Vivian Bennett.
The tallest of the six, a hulking man with a thick beard peppered with gray and a scar slicing across his jaw, stepped forward. He stopped three paces from Vivian, brought his boots together, and snapped a pristine, razor-sharp salute.
""Task Force Trident Black, standing by for inspection, Commander,"" the giant barked, his voice vibrating through the floorboards. ""Per your encrypted directive, perimeter secured.""
Vivian returned the salute with crisp, effortless perfection. ""At ease, Mason.""
The five other operators eased into parade rest, their arms locked behind their backs, standing like granite statues flanking the center court.
Malden's mouth hung open. The microphone in his grip picked up the ragged sound of his breathing. He tried to laugh it off, but the sound came out like dry paper scraping together. ""Commander? What kind of practical joke is this? Chief Griggs, do you know what kind of stunt this lady is pulling?""
Chief Griggs didn't lower his salute. His eyes were wide with genuine dread. ""Lieutenant... shut your mouth right now. Shut it and put that microphone down.""
""Excuse me, Chief?"" Malden bristled, his fragile ego flaring up. ""You're speaking to a commissioned officer! I don't take orders from a reservist chief, and I certainly don't get intimidated by hired actors in surplus gear!""

Vivian took two slow, measured steps toward Malden. She didn't raise her voice, but when she spoke, every syllable fell like lead.
""Lieutenant Malden, you publicly informed these students that no woman has ever worn the Trident. You told my son that his mother was a liar. And then you asked for a demonstration."" Vivian gestured toward the tactical setup behind her. ""I'm waiting for you to lead by example, Lieutenant. Or do your regulations only apply when you're bullying teenagers from behind a PA system?""
