Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

Two weeks later, the Bennett family received a formal visit at their home.
A sleek black sedan with Department of Defense government plates pulled into their gravel driveway. But it wasn't a deployment officer or a military police escort.
Out stepped Rear Admiral Harris, the regional commander of Naval Special Warfare, dressed in pristine dress blues. Standing beside him was Chief Griggs, wearing a civilian suit and carrying a leather portfolio.
Vivian and Jonah met them on the front porch, with Scout sitting perfectly beside the door like a bronze statue.
""Commander Bennett,"" Admiral Harris said, stepping onto the porch and snapping a formal, heartfelt salute. Vivian returned it immediately.
""Admiral. To what do we owe the honor?"" Vivian asked.
""I came here to personally deliver two pieces of news,"" Admiral Harris replied, turning his gaze toward Jonah with a warm smile. ""First, former Lieutenant Corey Malden has been officially processed out of the United States Navy under other-than-honorable conditions. Furthermore, the Department of the Navy has issued a formal reprimand to the district recruiting office to ensure integrity standards are strictly enforced.""
""Good riddance,"" Jonah muttered softly, earning an amused nod from Chief Griggs.
""Second,"" Admiral Harris continued, pulling an official document from the leather folder, ""the Secretary of Defense has officially approved the partial declassification of Operation Neptune's Shield. Starting next month, Commander Bennett, your role as the first female team leader within Special Warfare Development Group will be entered into the permanent, public naval archives.""
Vivian froze. For the first time in years, Jonah saw a flicker of raw emotion cross his mother's stoic face.
""Sir?"" she breathed. ""The executive seal was lifted?""
""The operational details remain redacted to protect our methods,"" the Admiral explained gently. ""But your name, your Trident, and your combat valor will no longer remain in the shadows. Young men and women across this nation deserve to know who paved the way. And your son deserves to say his mother was a Navy SEAL without anyone daring to question him ever again.""
Tears welled in Vivian's eyes. She accepted the official parchment with steady hands, her knuckles whitening as she held the proof of her lifetime of sacrifice.
Later that evening, the family gathered around the dining table. Chief Griggs and Mason had stayed for dinner, filling the house with loud laughter, stories of brotherhood, and the warm aroma of home-cooked food.

Jonah looked across the table at his mother. The classified shadows that had hovered over their lives for over a decade had finally lifted, replaced by the brilliant, untarnished light of truth.
Malden had tried to turn Jonah into the joke of the school. Instead, he had given the world a front-row seat to an unbreakable bond between a son and the fearless mother who had conquered the darkest corners of the earth—and had come home to conquer his bullies too."
