Chapter 3 - The Challenge On The Court

A collective gasp rippled through the bleachers. Jonah sat frozen, his hand buried in Scout's thick fur, feeling the dog's chest rumble with a deep, low vibration. Scout knew these men. Scout was leaning forward, tail giving a slow, deliberate wag as the giant named Mason winked subtly down at the dog.

Malden's face flushed a deep, mottled red. He had painted himself into a corner in front of hundreds of teenagers, school administrators, and competing military branch recruiters. To back down now would ruin his reputation across the entire regional recruiting command.

""Ma'am, with all due respect, I'm wearing service dress,"" Malden sneered, tugging at his pressed collar. ""I don't need to roll around on the floor to prove my qualifications. My commission speaks for itself.""

""Take off the blouse, Lieutenant,"" Vivian said calmly. ""Unless your dress uniform is the only thing holding up your backbone.""

The students erupted. It wasn't the cruel laughter from before; it was the raw, electric shock of teenagers watching an arrogant authority figure get called out to his face. Several kids pulled out their smartphones, pointing their cameras directly at center court.

""Put those phones away!"" Principal Vance yelled from the sidelines, scurrying forward in a cheap suit, his hands flapping nervously. ""This is inappropriate for a high school assembly! Commander—or whoever you are—I must ask you to leave immediately!""

Mason took half a step toward the principal. He didn't touch him. He didn't even yell. He simply cast a shadow over the school administrator and lowered his gaze.

""Sit down, sir,"" Mason rumbled softly. ""Adults are speaking.""

Principal Vance swallowed hard, backed up three steps, and sat down hard on the first row of bleachers, clutching his briefcase to his chest.

Malden, realizing no one was coming to save him, ripped off his uniform jacket and threw it onto the scorer's table. He unbuttoned his cuffs and rolled his sleeves up his forearms. He was in decent physical shape, clearly spending hours in commercial gyms lifting heavy weights to look good in a polo shirt, but there was a vast difference between gym muscles and combat conditioning.

""Standard BUD/S physical screening parameters,"" Malden snapped, stepping up to the tactical pull-up bar. ""Fifty-yard sprint, dead-hang weighted pull-ups, eighty-pound farmer carry, and ground-and-pound dummy transition. Fastest time wins. If you tap out, lady, you apologize to these kids for wasting their time.""

""And if you lose, Lieutenant?"" Vivian asked, her hands resting easily at her sides.

""I won't,"" Malden snarled.

""If you lose,"" Vivian stated coldly, ""you surrender your microphone, you apologize to my son on your knees, and you explain to this entire assembly why you decided to fabricate military history just to feed your own fragile ego.""

May you like

""Deal,"" Malden spat. He grabbed the pull-up bar, nodded toward Chief Griggs. ""Chief, on your whistle!""

Chief Griggs looked sick to his stomach. He pulled out his silver coaching whistle, raised it to his lips with a shaking hand, and blew.
