Chapter 5 - The Redacted File

The word stolen valor hung in the air like poison. In military culture, there was no worse accusation. Accusing an active service member of faking credentials in front of civilian minors was a career-ending provocation.

Chief Griggs finally broke rank, rushing toward Malden. ""Lieutenant, shut up! You don't know who you're talking to! For the love of God, step down!""

""No, Chief! She's a fraud!"" Malden screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria. ""I graduated near the top of my class at Annapolis! I know Naval Special Warfare Command regulations inside and out! If she was a SEAL, her name would be in the public registry! She’s a ghost, which means she’s a fake!""

Vivian didn't look angry. She looked almost bored.

""Mason,"" she murmured.

The bearded giant reached into his tactical chest rig, produced an encrypted military-grade ruggedized tablet, and walked directly over to Malden. He didn't hand the tablet to the lieutenant. He held it six inches in front of Malden's bulging eyes.

On the screen was a live, biometric-locked interface connecting directly to the Department of the Navy’s Special Operations Command at Coronado. Across the digital header ran a scarlet banner that read: CLASSIFICATION: TOP SECRET // SI-TK // NOFORN // SPECIAL ACCESS REQUIRED.

Beneath the banner was an official portrait of Vivian Bennett in full dress blues, her chest completely covered in ribbon racks that included the Navy Cross, two Silver Stars, and the Purple Heart. And pinned directly above the highest medals was a golden Trident—the Special Warfare insignia.

Below her name was a single, terrifying line of text:

Operator Status: DEVGRU / Black Squadron. Operational clearance level: Exceeds General Officer Grade. Public disclosure: PERMANENTLY REDACTED UNDER EXECUTIVE DIRECTIVE 13-ALPHA.

Malden's pupils dilated to pinpricks. The color completely drained from his lips. He backed away from the screen as if it had burned his retinas.

""You..."" Malden whispered, his voice shrinking to a faint squeak. ""You're... you're Unit Nine. The ghost unit.""

May you like

""The Navy doesn't publish the names of operators who hunt high-value targets in sovereign nations where we aren't officially supposed to be, Lieutenant,"" Vivian said, taking a step closer. ""When you told this room that no woman had ever earned a Trident, you were half right. No woman had ever earned one on the public payroll. Because doing what I did requires being erased from history so little boys like you can sleep safely in their beds at night.""

Malden began to shake. The arrogance that had fueled him all evening vanished, replaced by cold, suffocating terror. He realized he had just publicly insulted, challenged, and falsely accused one of the most lethal, highly classified operational commanders in the entire United States armed forces.
