Chapter 8 - The Price of Treachery

Forty-eight hours later, the storm had passed, leaving Chicago bathed in crisp, crystalline sunlight.
Alexander’s heart monitor chimed with a steady, strengthening rhythm. His fingers twitched beneath Claire's palm. Slowly, painfully, his eyelids fluttered open, squinting against the soft morning light.
The first thing he saw was Claire, sleeping with her head resting on the edge of his mattress, still holding his hand.
A tear slipped from Alexander’s eye. He tried to speak, but only a dry rasp escaped his throat.
Claire stirred instantly, sitting up. When she saw his open eyes, a breathless sob broke from her chest. ""Alexander! You're awake.""
He reached out weakly, his thumb brushing against her wrist. ""You're... still here.""
""Of course I’m here, you idiot,"" she said, half-laughing, half-crying as she carefully poured him a sip of water with a straw. ""You think I'd let you die after you made such a mess?""
""Claire... about Vancini...""
""Vancini is in federal custody, singing like a canary to avoid the death penalty,"" Claire said, her expression shifting into cold, lethal steel. ""And the harbor contracts are safe. But there is something else you need to know. Something about that day on the mountain.""
Claire played the audio recording for him.
As Sophia’s voice confessed to orchestrating the avalanche detonation, the heart monitor beside Alexander’s bed began beeping erratically. The monitors flashed amber. The sheer, murderous rage in Alexander’s eyes was so terrifying that the nurse entering the room stepped back in fright.
""She... killed our child,"" Alexander whispered, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the hospital bed rails, his surgical stitches straining under the tension. ""She planned it.""
""Yes,"" Claire said quietly. ""And she is sitting in a safehouse downtown right now, waiting for Vancini’s men to bring her cash to flee the country.""
Alexander ripped off his pulse oximeter, trying to swing his legs out of bed. ""Marco! Bring me my clothes! Bring me a weapon!""
""Alexander, stop!"" Claire commanded, placing both hands firmly on his chest, feeling his wild, furious heartbeat beneath her palms. ""Lie down! You just had your lung patched together!""
""She murdered our baby, Claire! I will rip her apart with my bare hands!""
""No,"" Claire said, her eyes flashing with absolute authority. ""You won't get your hands dirty. That’s what Sophia wants—to drag you down into a life of prison or murder. We are going to destroy her legally, completely, and publicly. I have already arranged everything. All I need is your signature.""
Alexander looked up into Claire's fierce, protective eyes. For the first time in his life, the mafia king surrendered all his control to a woman. ""Anything. Whatever you command, my queen.""
That afternoon, Sophia sat inside a luxury safehouse apartment, packing stolen diamonds into a leather duffel bag. The door was kicked off its hinges with a thunderous crack.
Sophia screamed, dropping the bag.
A squad of federal marshals, backed by state prosecutors and the Chicago Special Victims unit, stormed the room with rifles drawn. Behind them stood Julian Bennett’s lead attorney and Marco.
""Sophia Reynolds,"" the lead marshal barked. ""You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, attempted murder, domestic terrorism, and the manslaughter of an unborn infant.""
""What? No! Alex! Alex will protect me! You can't touch me, I’m Alexander Moretti’s family!"" she shrieked, thrashing as handcuffs were locked tight around her wrists.
Marco stepped forward, tossing a signed document onto the coffee table in front of her. ""The boss signed your death warrant himself, Sophia. He handed over all your financial records, your phone taps, and the mountain weather logs to the federal grand jury. You’re going to a maximum-security penitentiary for life without parole. And when you arrive, every inmate will know you murdered a child.""

Sophia’s face drained of color. She collapsed onto her knees, screaming Alexander's name into the empty room, but no one came to save her.
