Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Grass

Alexander didn't sleep that night. He mobilized his most trusted intelligence network to track Victor Vancini’s movements in Chicago. Claire believed she was playing a game of ruthless high-finance, but Alexander knew the darkness of the underworld better than anyone. Men like Vancini did not negotiate with women; they preyed upon them.
Meanwhile, in a dingy hotel room on the outskirts of the city, Sophia Reynolds sat clutching a glass of cheap gin, her face twisted in bitter hatred. Her social media had been wiped out, her luxury credit cards declined, and her former society friends mocked her endlessly after the gala humiliation.
Her phone rang with an unknown number.
""Hello?"" she answered sharply.
""Ms. Reynolds,"" a raspy, menacing voice purred on the other end. ""I understand you have an intimate history with both Alexander Moretti and his lovely ex-wife.""
Sophia straightened up, her pulse racing. ""Who is this?""
""My name is Victor Vancini. And I believe we have a mutual desire to see Claire Bennett removed from the board.""
An hour later, Sophia sat inside a tinted limousine across from Victor Vancini—a scarred, middle-aged mobster with predatory black eyes and gold rings on his fingers.
""Claire thinks she's untouchable because of her grandfather’s billions,"" Vancini said, swirling a cigar between his teeth. ""She wants to use my network to push Moretti out of the Midwest. But once Moretti falls, who protects her? Her corporate guards are amateurs compared to my soldiers.""
""What do you want from me?"" Sophia asked, her voice shaking with venomous excitement.
""I need access to her schedule, her private residence, and her security codes. You lived in the Moretti inner circle for years; you know how their private transport contractors operate—the same ones her grandfather hired. Give me an opening to take her, and once Bennett Global pays the ransom and surrenders their port rights, I’ll eliminate Claire for good. And Moretti? Broken, penniless, he’ll have nobody left in this world except you.""
Sophia didn't hesitate for a single second. The thought of Claire lying dead, stripped of her beauty and power, filled her with sick ecstasy. ""She visits a private medical clinic in Oak Brook every Thursday morning. No heavy security, just two guards. She goes for post-trauma therapy and reproductive checkups.""
Vancini grinned, a wolf baring yellow teeth. ""Good girl. You just earned yourself a seat at the high table.""
Two days later, Thursday morning arrived under heavy, slate-gray rainclouds.
Alexander was reviewing surveillance footage inside his war room when his phone alerted him to an encrypted breach. He had secretly placed a silent tracking tap on Sophia's burner phone weeks ago, anticipating she might try something reckless. The audio recording of her conversation with Vancini decrypted onto his monitor.
As the words 'eliminate Claire for good' played through the speakers, Alexander’s heart stopped.
""Marco!"" he bellowed, his voice laced with feral panic. ""Mobilize the strike team! Oak Brook medical plaza, now! Vancini is moving on Claire!""
Alexander grabbed two automatic pistols, sprinted out of the penthouse, and threw himself into his armored Mercedes, tearing into the rain-slicked highway at over a hundred miles per hour.
Hold on, Claire, he prayed, tears blurring his vision as he slammed the accelerator down. Please God, let me be in time. Don't let me fail her again.
At that exact moment, Claire was walking out of the Oak Brook clinic beneath an umbrella held by her bodyguard. Her heart felt heavy; the doctor had just confirmed that while her uterine recovery was progressing miraculously well, emotional stress was still hindering her physical healing.
Suddenly, two black vans screeched around the corner, jumping the curb and blocking her car.
Masked men with automatic weapons spilled out into the pouring rain.
""Ambush! Miss Bennett, get down!"" her guard shouted, drawing his sidearm, but a hail of suppressed gunfire cut both her bodyguards down before they could take cover.
Claire gasped, backing toward the clinic doors, but the locks had already clicked shut from the inside. A man stepped forward from the rain, lowering his mask—Victor Vancini.

""Good morning, Princess,"" Vancini sneered, raising a heavy pistol toward her chest. ""Time to pay your debts to Detroit.""
