Chapter 4 - The War for Chicago

Within forty-eight hours, Claire’s promises began to materialize into Alexander’s living nightmare.

It began with the ports. The Moretti family had controlled the Chicago harbor distribution lines for three generations, running legitimate freight alongside protected syndicate operations. On Monday morning, Alexander arrived at his downtown headquarters to find his board of directors in a state of sheer panic.

""Boss, we’re locked out,"" Marco said, barging into the office with a stack of legal injunctions. ""The federal maritime commission raided terminals four through nine at dawn. Every single shipping container under the Moretti seal has been impounded for audit.""

""On what grounds?"" Alexander demanded, slamming his fists onto his mahogany desk. ""Who authorized this?""

""Bennett Global Holdings bought out the municipal port debt over the weekend,"" Marco stammered. ""They invoked an ancient maritime clause from 1924 regarding hazardous cargo oversight. They didn't just audit us, boss. They canceled our operating lease. They own the docks now. We have two hundred million dollars worth of European contracts sitting out on the water, unable to dock. Every day they float out there, we face fifty million in contractual default penalties!""

Alexander sank into his leather chair, a bitter, admiring smile touching his lips despite the catastrophe. ""She’s brilliant. She didn't use guns. She used paper.""

""Boss, we have to strike back!"" Marco urged, his jaw tight. ""If the street capos find out an East Coast heiress is squeezing our throat, they’ll think you’ve gone soft. The Vancini family in Detroit is already making calls, sniffing around our territory.""

""Nobody touches Claire Bennett!"" Alexander roared, his voice shaking the glass windows. ""If anyone so much as breathes in her direction, I will skin them alive myself. Do you understand me?""

""Then what do we do?""

Alexander stood up, straightening his black coat. ""Set up a meeting with her. Tell her the CEO of Moretti Logistics agrees to all her terms for a private sit-down.""

The meeting was arranged that evening at the Bennett Tower—a gleaming seventy-story skyscraper overlooking the skyline. When Alexander arrived, he was stripped of his weapons by her private security, an indignity no mafia boss would ever endure. Yet he submitted willingly, without a word of protest. For Claire, he would walk into hell barefoot.

He was escorted into the executive penthouse office. Claire sat behind an expansive minimalist desk made of black obsidian, reviewing financial spreadsheets on a tablet. Behind her, the city lights sparkled like cold jewels.

""You're bleeding three million dollars an hour, Mr. Moretti,"" she said without glancing up from her screen. ""Punctuality is the only wise decision you've made today.""

Alexander ignored the desk and walked straight toward her, stopping only when her head guard stepped into his path. Claire made a slight motion with her pen, and the guard retreated to the corner.

Alexander knelt by the side of her chair. ""Take the ports, Claire. Take the real estate. Take every dollar in the Moretti offshore accounts. I don't care about the money. I don't care about the empire.""

Claire paused, turning her chair toward him. Her gaze was unreadable. ""Then what do you care about?""

""You,"" he whispered, his eyes bloodshot, his hands trembling as he rested them against the armrest of her chair, daring not to touch her skin. ""I want to atone. Tell me what to do. You want me to renounce the syndicate? I'll walk away tomorrow. You want blood? Take my gun and shoot me. But don't look at me like I’m a stranger. I can't survive it, Claire. I am dying every single day without you.""

Claire looked down at the feared king of Chicago kneeling at her feet. For a fraction of a second, a flicker of pain crossed her features. But then she leaned forward, her voice a chilling whisper.

""Do you know what the worst part of that mountain was, Alexander? It wasn't the cold. It was the hope. Every time the wind howled, I thought it was your car engine coming back. Every time a shadow crossed the snow, I thought you had realized your mistake and turned around to save our baby. You made me hope until the snow buried me alive.""

She stood up, towering over him. ""You want to atone? Then watch your legacy burn. Because tomorrow morning, I’m signing a contract with the Vancini syndicate.""

Alexander shot to his feet, pure horror seizing him. ""The Vancinis? Claire, no! Victor Vancini is a psychotic butcher! He doesn't honor business deals—he will try to use you, hurt you, take your family's assets!""

May you like

""I am a Bennett, Alexander,"" Claire said coldly, walking toward the floor-to-ceiling glass. ""I don't get used. I dictate terms. Now get out of my office.""
