Chapter 7 - The Unspoken Confession

The sterile waiting room of Northwestern Memorial Hospital smelled sickeningly familiar.
Claire sat on a vinyl chair, still drenched in rain and soaked in Alexander’s blood. Her hands shook so violently she couldn't hold the paper cup of water Marco had handed her. Around her stood twenty of Alexander’s most loyal soldiers, their heads bowed in somber silence, alongside four Bennett family security details who had formed an impenetrable cordon around the floor.
Hours dragged into eternity. The red 'IN SURGERY' light remained illuminated like an ominous beacon.
Julian Bennett arrived two hours later, accompanied by legal aides. The elderly patriarch walked straight to his granddaughter, placing a warm, wrinkled hand on her trembling shoulder.
""Claire, my child,"" Julian said gently. ""The surgeons are the best in the country. Come home. You need dry clothes. You need to rest.""
""No, Grandfather,"" Claire whispered, her voice hoarse from crying. ""I’m not leaving.""
""He hurt you, Claire. He broke your heart and abandoned you.""
Claire looked up, her tear-streaked eyes red and hollow. ""He threw his body in front of machine guns to save me today. He took three bullets meant for my chest. If he dies, Grandfather... he dies because of me.""
Suddenly, Marco approached with a secured tablet. His face was thunderous. ""Miss Bennett... boss's phone decrypted the remaining files recovered from Vancini’s compromised servers. You need to hear this.""
He pressed play.
The audio filled the quiet waiting area. It was Sophia Reynolds’s voice, clear, cold, and calculated, speaking to Vancini, detailing Claire’s private clinic visits, laughing about how Claire would finally be discarded. But then the recording continued—an older file, dated seven months prior.
It was Sophia on the phone with a local weather scout in the Rocky Mountains on the day of the avalanche.
‘Make sure the east ridge detonation test goes off around noon,’ Sophia’s recorded voice instructed with chilling calmness. ‘The ski patrol said the snowpack is unstable anyway. Alexander will be off the peak by then, but his dear wife will still be waiting. Let nature do the dirty work.’
Claire gasped, the blood turning to pure ice in her veins.
The avalanche hadn't been an accident of nature.
Sophia had triggered it. Sophia had planned to murder her on that mountain all along, ensuring that Alexander would be called away with a fake emergency so only Claire would be buried alive.
""She killed my baby,"" Claire breathed, the realization striking her like a seismic shockwave. ""It wasn't an accident. Sophia murdered our child.""
Before anyone could speak, the surgical doors swung open.
The chief surgeon walked out, pulling down his bloody mask, looking exhausted to the bone. Claire sprang to her feet, stumbling forward.
""Doctor! Is he...""
""We repaired the perforated lung and extracted two bullets from his abdomen,"" the surgeon said heavily. ""He lost a massive amount of blood. His heart stopped twice on the table. We brought him back, but he is in a medically induced coma. The next forty-eight hours will determine if he has the will to wake up.""
Claire didn't wait for permission. She pushed past the nurses and walked into the intensive care unit.
Alexander lay motionless beneath a tangle of monitors, IV lines, and a ventilator tube. His broad, powerful frame looked shockingly fragile beneath the thin hospital sheet.
Claire pulled a chair to the bedside, reaching out with both hands to clasp his cold, scarred fingers. She pressed his knuckles against her wet cheek, letting her tears soak his skin.
""Alexander,"" she whispered brokenly. ""You promised me ten years. You put that necklace around my neck and said you wanted five more years, and five more after that. You don't get to die on me now. You don't get to escape your punishment so easily.""

She leaned down, her lips brushing against his pale forehead. ""Fight, Alexander. Wake up. Because we have a monster to destroy together.""
