Chapter 2 - The Return of the Bennett Heiress

Six months passed. To the underworld of Chicago, Alexander Moretti had transformed into a ghost of vengeance. He barely slept, barely ate, and spent millions of dollars tearing apart three continents in search of Claire. He had banished Sophia Reynolds from his estates, stripping her of the luxury apartment, credit cards, and security detail he had foolishly funded for years. When Sophia came weeping to his office, begging for mercy, he had cold-bloodedly had her escorted out by armed guards into the pouring rain. He realized too late that Sophia’s helpless emergencies had always been orchestrated manipulations to pull him from Claire.
Yet Claire had vanished off the face of the earth.
Until the night of the Chicago International Philanthropy Gala at the Drake Hotel.
It was the most prestigious gathering of the year, bringing together old-money elites, high-ranking politicians, and the shadowed kings of industry. Alexander attended solely because rumors swirled that the elusive patriarch of the East Coast Bennett dynasty—Julian Bennett—would be making his first appearance in the Midwest to announce a multi-billion-dollar harbor redevelopment that threatened to cut the Moretti empire out of the docks entirely.
Alexander stood near the mezzanine, glass of untouched bourbon in hand, his hollow cheeks and dark circles betraying his relentless torment. Beside him, Marco murmured, ""Boss, the Bennett motorcade just arrived. Word is, Old Man Bennett suffered a stroke last month and officially handed the entire enterprise over to his granddaughter, the sole surviving heir.""
The ballroom doors swung wide. The chatter died down instantly into a sea of reverent whispers.
Down the grand marble staircase walked a woman escorted by four elite bodyguards in bespoke charcoal suits.
Alexander dropped his glass. The crystal shattered across the parquet floor, splashing bourbon over his shoes, but he didn't feel it. He couldn't breathe.
It was Claire.
Gone was the quiet, soft-spoken woman who wore oversized knitted sweaters, tied her hair in simple ponytails, and waited anxiously by the door with a warm dinner. The woman descending the stairs wore a midnight-blue silk gown tailored like liquid starlight, split high at the thigh, revealing an aura of absolute royalty. Her glossy dark hair cascaded over bare, sculpted shoulders. Around her neck was not the diamond chain he had bought her, but a priceless sapphire choker that belonged to European royalty.
Her skin was luminous, her posture commanding. But what struck Alexander straight through the chest were her eyes.
They were cold. Diamond-hard. Completely devoid of the adoration that had once sustained his soul.
""Claire..."" Alexander breathed, taking a staggering step forward.
Beside her walked Julian Bennett, the formidable patriarch, leaning lightly on a silver cane. As they reached the ballroom floor, high-ranking senators and banking titans bowed their heads to greet her.
""Allow me to introduce my granddaughter and the new Chief Executive of Bennett Global Holdings,"" Julian announced, his voice echoing across the silent hall. ""Claire Bennett.""
Not Claire Bennett Moretti. Just Claire Bennett.
Alexander pushed through the crowded guests like an enraged bull, ignoring the gasps and protests of the high-society elite. ""Claire!""
The guards instantly stepped forward, hands sliding inside their jackets, but Claire raised a single, manicured hand, halting them. She turned slowly to face him.
Her gaze swept over him as if he were an inconsequential stain on the wallpaper. ""Do I know you, sir?""
The question tore through Alexander’s chest worse than a hollow-point bullet. He choked on his words, reaching out toward her. ""Claire, stop this. Please. You're alive. My God, you're alive! Do you know what I’ve been through? Do you know how many nights I searched for you?""
May you like
""I asked if I knew you,"" Claire repeated, her voice musical, cool, and devastatingly calm. ""Because the only Moretti I recall doing business with is a man who owes my shipping logistics firm thirty million dollars in overdue terminal fees. Unless you've come with a certified check, Mr. Moretti, please step aside. You're blocking my light.""
