Chapter 1 - The Blood on the Sheets and the Phantom Ghost

Alexander Moretti stood paralyzed in the clinical glare of the corridor, the air suffocating his lungs. His tailored Italian suit, usually immaculate, felt like a cage of razor wire. In the palm of his hand lay the diamond necklace he had clasped around Claire’s neck only twenty-four hours earlier on that desolate summit—its gems smeared with dry, rusty crimson. Beside it was a delicate silver wedding band, stripped cold and abandoned.
""What do you mean, pregnant?"" Alexander choked out, his deep baritone fracturing into a pitiful rasp. ""Tell me you made a mistake. Tell me right now!""
The head trauma nurse did not flinch beneath the glare that made syndicate capos drop to their knees. Her eyes burned with disgust. ""She arrived hypothermic and crushed by snow, Mr. Moretti. She had severe internal hemorrhaging from an acute uterine rupture. She lost your baby alone on that mountain. And while you ran off to tend to a woman with a superficial kitchen burn, your wife suffered secondary vascular shock. Her blood pressure cratered to zero. She nearly bled to death right in that bed while your phone went straight to voicemail seven times.""
The hallway seemed to tilt violently. Alexander’s vision tunnelled into black static. A baby. A child. His child with Claire—the quiet, devoted woman who had waited five long years for him in an empty penthouse, offering him warmth in a life built on gunpowder and severed loyalties. He remembered the hesitation in her eyes on the overlook, her lips trembling as she said, 'Alexander, there’s something I need to tell you.' And he had cut her off. He had walked away for Sophia.
""Where is she?"" Alexander roared, his voice echoing off the sterile walls, terrifying the orderly down the hall. His hand shot forward, gripping the nurse’s clipboard. ""Where did they move her? Intensive Care? Private surgical suite? Name the floor!""
""She checked herself out against medical advice twenty minutes ago, Mr. Moretti,"" the nurse replied coldly, snatching the clipboard back. ""A private security detail arrived with an executive medical transport. She signed the AMA release forms with her maiden name: Claire Bennett. She left those rings for you. She said to tell you that you are finally free to give Sophia everything.""
""No. No, Claire, no!"" Alexander spun around, tearing into the empty hospital room. The white sheets were stripped bare, but a faint, horrifying stain of dark copper remained soaked into the mattress edge. The closet was open, completely cleared out. The bouquet of white peonies he had instructed his driver to bring sat untouched on the bedside table, rotting beneath the fluorescent hum.
He pulled out his phone, his fingers trembling with a frantic, animal terror he had never felt in his thirty-two years of dominance. He dialed her number.
The number you have dialed is no longer in service.
He dialed his head of security, Marco. ""Marco! Lock down every exit of Chicago Memorial! Seal O’Hare, Midway, the private airstrips, the train stations, the highways! Bring every soldier we have. Find my wife! If anyone lays a finger on her, kill them, but bring her back to me!""
""Boss?"" Marco’s hesitant voice crackled over the speaker. ""We just pulled the traffic cameras outside the rear ambulance bay. A convoy of black armored SUVs picked Mrs. Moretti up. They weren't local syndicate. Boss... the tags belonged to the Bennett Sovereign Trust out of New York. The old industrial dynasty.""
Alexander froze, the blood draining from his face. Five years ago, he had met Claire working as an unassuming art curator in downtown Chicago. She had never spoken of family. She had never asked for money, jewels, or territory. She had lived humbly, asking only for his time, his loyalty, his heart.
""The Bennett Dynasty?"" Alexander whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs like a sledgehammer. ""Claire is an heiress?""
Before he could process the revelation, his phone chimed. It was Sophia. Her voice came through the speaker, sweet, fragile, and demanding. ""Alex? My hand hurts so badly. The doctor gave me ointment, but I’m alone in the penthouse and the storm is getting worse. Can you come pick up some soup for me?""
For five years, that voice had commanded his instinctive guilt, bound by a childhood promise to her dying father. But as Alexander stood staring at his wife’s blood on the hospital bed, the sound of Sophia’s voice made him violently ill.
""Don't call this phone again, Sophia,"" Alexander snarled, his tone laced with venom.
""Alex? What’s wrong with you? It’s me!""
May you like
""My wife is gone because of you,"" he said, tears finally breaking past his hardened eyes. ""And if she doesn't come back, God help you."" He crushed the phone beneath his leather boot, shattering the glass into a hundred glittering pieces, just like his marriage.
